Cat Deterrent Ideas

You're all going to get a chuckle out of this. Recently moved my amps out of a credenza. It was very open to provide ventilation, but I managed to MacGyver'd a way to keep the cats out. Amps are now on amp stands. My cats, of course, think this a great way to toast their behinds.

They know better to get on them with humans in the room, but the one amp powers the remote speaker switcher, so nobody is in the room when it's on. Top of the amp is completely slotted. Not really concerned about it overheating, but I don't like the thought of fur, dander, and litter making it's way inside.

Sure, I could MacGyver a cage to go over top, but was hoping to find a more elegant solution. Who has some ideas?

Those are at the top of my list. But I imagine they'd quickly realize they can swat them off unless secured somehow, which I'd like to avoid for cleaning purposes. Probably still the best option.

Maybe small tabs of 3M 10lb mounting tape at each end of the strip?

Still easy enough for you to remove them for cleaning, but should be resistant to swatting.

Also could put a fake dead cat in the tines as an example of what happened to the last cat person who tried it?

Post a picture of the top or state what amp it is, so I can see what it looks like. I may have an idea.

You must really like those cats... I have a list of things you "could" do but would likely get me banned, guess that's why I don't have cats...

If you were thinking along the lines of Brenneke Magnum Crush then I can see why you wouldn't want to suggest that. 🤔

It might not look great, but if you put a thin grid of double sided tape on top, they would probably not enjoy that. It could be a temporary thing that you could remove after a month or two after they've come to associate it with the uncomfortable stickiness.
For rig details, see my profile. Nothing here anymore...

Pretty much what I was going to suggest. Cats hate sticky stuff.

You could also try putting sheets of cardboard or the like covered in double sided sticky tape on the floor around the amps if you don't want to put the tape on the amp covers.

I agree with the tape idea. However, given the operating temps of the amps, I'm pretty sure I'd need a whole bottle of Goo Gone to remove. The Aragon heat sinks run at 125 deg F, at idle. Yeah, it's heavily biased into class A. Top isn't much cooler.

Looks like bird spikes, tin foil,or a cage. I'll be sure to post pics of the rediculousness.

    Thanks for the input!

Edited to add. I'm on vacation all of next week. I'm sure I can conjure something effective but craptastic....

What about different scents. I found my cats hate menthol. They also don't like some herbs like rosemary. I have a little cloth pouch with rosemary in it that I put behind the grills of my LSi15s and it seems to keep them away. Also essential oils.

Set up a sensor in front of the amplifier that will set off a bull horn anytime something moves at the amp

I have three cats. I close the door to the listening room. Not for the system, but because one (or more) of them like to chew on the blinds. Also the one year old, I don't know if I can trust her around speaker grills yet. Though none of my other cats have ever bothered them.

    No. The answer is no.
Never trust cats. They are always calculating, always scheming.

Best you play dumb around them, too. Let them underestimate you.

Let us know how the cats react. Whether they manifest their displeasure in other ways, or try to steal your breath at night while you sleep.

I've read that they can induce sleepwalking. They're likely to setup a night time obstacle course for you, resulting in facial impalement on your contraption. We'll need to see those photos.

But... Another option could be to remove the contraption, making sure that your cats see you doing this. Make a big show of it, and pet them and give them treats afterward. Then, later on, cats still watching, get your wife or son to place the deterrent back onto your amps. The reason for this, I believe, is obvious.

If all else fails, could make a pit stop on a road where the county road department sets out traffic cones but never does any work for several weeks. Pick up a free cone to use.

    Or buy one.
