I just had the cable company at my house last week to fix the upstairs cable connection. I actually bought RCA digital splitters to try an fix the problem but the problem was with the cable going to the upstairs.....anyway this is what the tech guy told me about splitters and wire:

    1) they use the 5mhz to 1ghz with low loss which is -3.5db. Make sure you can find splitters that have this low db loss....there are a lot out there that have -7.0db loss and some with a combination. The tech said to get digital splitters with a built in surge protection....naturally he said to go to my cable company and buy theirs but if you can find ones w/ the above specs they should do fine.

    2) he said to use the new rg6 cable..it has a thicker conductor wire and is better shielded to prevent signal loss. I saw rg6 at a local audio store and the cable is thicker. The one I was looking at had a big sticker on it saying it was rg6.

no....I showed him the RCA which was 2.4ghz and he just said that they use different splitters....our service is digital cable and they are only recommending 1ghz splitters. The picture looks great so I guess 1ghz will do fine as long as it's a low loss splitter (he emphasized this point).

1 gig splitters and RG59 are supposed to be just fine for all cable applications. Consider this-do they change the cable all the way back to the station for digital? Nope. The higher frequency stuff is primarily for satellite applications.

Also, if you're using RG-6QS (quad shield), make sure you get the right connectors, the standard one don't always fit.

Actually, the local cable company here did an infrastructure change before they upgraded the cable service to digital. I remember the big wooden wire spools on the our street corners when they were upgrading. It took a few months to complete it..

Hmmm good question considering all our cables are underground !!! they'd have to dig a hell of alot to change the cable type
