Polk Model Nine Driver ID

I got a pair of Model Nines in a package deal and I'm trying to figure out if the drivers are original. Mine have a large square magnet but no ID label. The only printed numbers I can make out are 7434 which turned up nothing online. I'll try to post a photo of the cabinet with tweeter and mid/woofer. The little drivers sound surprisingly good.

  • I believe that is an Audax 5102R 4.5" driver.

It's interesting that your driver spacing appears further apart compared to the one in the picture that marchardy posted in your previous thread:

Thanks for the replies. I got one of the drivers out far enough to photograph. There are traces of printed numbers on the back of the magnet but they are too faded to be legible. The wires are soldered on, no connectors.

I thought that the extended-range drivers were made by CTS(?).
CTS's EIA manufacturer code was 137.
FWIW, the later Model 9A used a proper dome tweeter instead of the Motorola piezo -- I thought (???) that the dome tweeter in the 9A might have been an Audax driver?

    Thanks guys.

Mhardy6647 do you have a pair also ? Someone glued my grilles on with what appears to be silicone RTV but I'll try hook and loop to attach them.

Mine are 9A, which have a regular dome tweeter & a proper crossover. They are, I'd opine, considerably better sounding than the original Model Nine.
I don't think I have heard a pair of the original Nines since the days when there was a white pair in the Rathskeller at JHU in the second half of the 1970s, though. :#
