I didn't get a degree in words so I couldn't Chaucer things because snoots are afraid of linguistic change =P

I try to relax, remember to leave my angry swingin' cane on the porch, and ride the communication 'coaster (with some understanding in my heart) while the Pinkers of the world play tour guide.

    [back to the topic]

    - One tweeter cap is kaput. It needs replaced [wink].

    - Looking forward to hearing both Peerless in working order. The one speaker has a nice feel to the top end. Impressive, for a 44-yr-old unit.

    - Sequential boxes, 1980?

    4s384pxke8l7.jpeg

    - Cabs are airtight.

    - Mids are free and surrounds are pliant. Will check spiders later.

    - The back edges of the veneer are rough.

    - The grilles need a light cleaning.

    - Hope this goes as well as @JayMX's refurb https://forum.polkaudio.com/discussion/197155/1982-monitor-7b-s-birthday-mods#latest

    - After playing around with the 7B last night, I'm even more curious about the M12 LF idea. That would be a neat stablemate to my current lineup...

I'll chime back in when I get some movement on the project.

My spare time has largely been taken by getting this project in order:

    https://unfamous.games

If any of you nerds will be at GenCon, we'll be showing our first game in the First Exposure Playtest Hall. It's been an interesting 2 years working on this after my day job, in-between my side job and time devoted to family (when I wasn't Strangemodding).

    Congrats on a great score!

How do you know one of the tweeter caps is kaput? No tweeter output?

PCB needs checked ( :D ) because it looks like there may be a couple cracks in the board by the stanchion holes.

With wool around the tweeter/midwoof, a chunk of foam below the tweeter, and a 1-3/4" radiused anti-diffraction frame I can vouch for these as imaging incredibly to the point where the speakers do disappear.

Are you going to mod one at a time? I understand if it isn't feasible for you.

Tweets: Dead one worked with other crossover.

PCB: I thought about printing a new board and doing wire point-to-point. I might put that to the top of my costs-me-very-little-but-time list.

I might have to press the passives out from behind. They're on tight.

Then I can better push out the mids (also on TIGHT).

I can mod these one at a time. To test.

    I still love Mortite!

    - The tweeters are different. Same model, different cast for magnet structure. Looks like one was replaced a looooong time ago.

    d5104hkejh7p.jpeg

    - There are scratches on the interior of the voice coils. Tolerances between pole piece and magnet structures are TIGHT. Everything is still centered. The glue is still doing its job. No big scratches on outside of voice coils.

Those gaskets look strange, almost like a layer of paper over the foam.

3514s and two different t-yoke back plate types. The myriad appearances of those back plates is comical, as far as what was going on with that? I had heard a theory that the ones with the pockmark texture were made in Denmark but who knows? Whoever knows hasn't spoken up.

Date codes are 2280 and 2281?

    I think it's a faulty zero.

    l7nm7umej0uc.jpeg

I need to take both mids out, but the first one is:

    tscpqo2re62o.jpeg

Looks like there are 3 gasket materials: Mortite on the passive, foam on the mids, and that layered paper thing on the tweets.

7/3/80 on crossover is within a few weeks of 2280 (22nd week of 1980). Amazing that someone got a replacement tweeter (the one with the clipped leads) with the same mfg. week as one of the originals. And that it may have a different factory origin. Denmark vs. USA?

That MW must be a replacement. The 6500s are prone to rubbing with the tighter VC clearances. It is weird there is an unnecessary pop rivet. Never saw that.

Is the raspy backed Peerless a 3514 or a 5514?

The other mid has no label, but it looks to be the same as the 6500:

    p5p67nl5cnt2.jpeg

I think the tweet is a 35. The ink flows opposite directions at the top of each number. That texture made the ink stamp difficult to adhere.

Who was the OCD Riveter? 😂 Why is there a red smudge over there, and a pink dot on the other side? Was the terminal originally on the other side lol?

Just to drive someone crazy, I have now seen the first # be 1,2,3,5, and 7. No 4 or 6 yet but I wouldn't be surprised if they are out there. Here's one that is NOS in a KO10DT labeled box that is a 25143577. Silver smooth back plate, with no flats. 7.7 Ohms.

Why not use perfboard? It's not point-to-point but you will get pretty darn close. Just put the leads in the through-holes next to each other and use a high quality solder to bridge the joints/pads.

I recall F1 recommending something called Quad-Eutectic a while ago for soldering audio components, unless I'm misremembering. I personally use a 63/37 leaded solder.

@ChrisD06 I always forget about perfs and such. For someone who mapped out boards when I was growing up, thinking I'd build my own computer, Heathkit-style, for some reason I never think about that route now...

    Brains are strange.
