I've posted this before. My father flew 51 missions in WWII in a B-24 Liberator. He kept a diary of his missions. These are his two diary pages of June 6, 1944. The last sentence of page two he mentions the
"invasion". The Greatest Generation!

My grandfather was to have been part of that assault as part of the second wave. Instead, he was recovering from a compound fracture in his leg, caused by slipping on the boarding ladder of his train that would have taken him to port. The Gear... My uncle, R. A. (Reuben Alonzo) ‘Bud’ Long of Bremen Georgia was one of the heroes of D-Day.
He volunteered to fly as a passenger in the gliders before the invasion to test the gliders, he went ashore on the beach on D-Day, then fought in General Patton's Army at the Battle of the Bulge as a member of the ski patrol, and continued on to Paris for the liberation of France.
His life: December 31, 1918 - May 3, 2009
I was honored to be a pallbearer. Uncle Bud was a quiet man, and never volunteered information about the war. I asked a lot of questions as a kid to learn of things I posted above. He also told me about the troop ship from the US to England on the North Sea as most of the soldiers were seasick from the giant waves. As an older man now, I have recognized Uncle Bud was affected as most men are by the war."Sometimes you have to look to the past to understand where you are going in the future"

We sent the aptly named USS Normandy over to Europe to participate in the 80th anniversary celebration, pretty cool if you ask me.
