L800s - 2 in front (L/R) and 2 in rear (Surround backs). Anyone ever do/test this?

Hey all. When I get a dedicated room whenever that is.. I plan to expand my 5.1.2 setup to 7.2.4.

I currently have L800s as FL/FR but was debating the idea of mirroring them for rears as well.

Ideas? Anyone ever try using an approach like this? Or would plain ol L600s or R700s just be better since the benefits of a 'SDA' square won't really matter?

The original TOTL Polk SRT system utilized smaller SDA rears, but and that is a big but, the system also utilized controllers to balance/fine tune the fronts and rears. You will not have that ability, therefore I don't think having L800 rears is a good idea.

Agree, the L800s are not the best choice. A pair of L600s or L200s on stands would be a better idea.

I think the L800s would only produce a good soundfield if they were about ten feet behind the listening spot and the front speakers would need to be the same distance away. The room would need to be very large.

I do have two pairs of the L800s and although I thought it might be cool to have both sets in a 5.1 system it's really not workable. Even if they were workable they would not be necessary given that they would just be doing rear surround effects.

True, appreciate the info and the what should've been obvious but I never stopped to think about, the distance they'd need to be behind to do what I would want to test.

Think I'll stick to original plan and get 2 more R700s for rears later on. Getting another pair of L200s and having x4 in main room has crossed my mind, but the stand issue for them would be annoying.
