l800's - breaker or fuses on board?

So here's the situation, my main tweeters in both channels aren't sounding after a most unfortunate blast of FM static, SDA tweeters sounding as normal (at least as normal as they can without the main tweeters playing the lead role.)

Are there breakers or fuses that might have been tripped in the crossover or elsewhere? There's no sound whatsoever coming from the main tweeters- unplug the interconnect cable and no sound out of any tweeters(as expected). Any advice is appreciated, I'm not even sure how to extract the crossover for diagnostics.

unfortunately, it sounds as though both tweeters are cooked... can you take close-up pictures of them and post them here?

There are no fuses or polyswitches. You either cooked a resistor or two and/or cooked the tweeters.

    This is your crossover.

The crossover is pretty robust, Jesse. I doubt that would be the source.

5 watt resistors do not take much to cook.

Both stereo tweeters out tells me it's likely something in the crossover. Could swap one of the SDA tweeters into a stereo tweeter spot to see if that tweeter can still produce sound there.

    Are the speakers under warranty?

Not sure about the warranty, may depend on how nice the Polk support guys are to me. I got them new in original sealed boxes a year or two ago from an eBay reseller.

I see no physical differences between any of the tweeters, and there is not a bit of sound- nothing, I'm thinking a blown tweeter would show at least some sonic or visible evidence. Thinking about trying your Tweeter swap advice just to be sure.. Any special method for removing the tweeters and/or getting to the crossover? I couldn't find any reference docs or disassembly videos.

A couple of new five watt resistors.. that would be nice. Here's hoping.

  • Spot on guys, swapped the mains/sdas, it's definitely the tweeters. Now to find replacements... do you think Polk offer warranty replacement in my situation? if not, is it possible to order them from the parts department?

Contact Polk CS and let them know you have isolated your issue to the tweeters. They will send replacements. but have your proof of purchase at the ready when you call.

Probably a long shot with my rudimentary soldering experience but I'd also take a crack at repairing these if it's remotely possible.

Forget about fixing them. In addition, you can't expect damage caused by your hand to be covered under warranty. Now, Polk may cover them, but you shouldn't expect it.
