Monitor 5B MW6502 Sound Issue

Options
Hi, all!

I got some great monitor 5s, but I noticed the sound out of one speaker is very quiet (though sounds not terrible). The mid on it isn't locked up, but I noticed there is a loose connection. Is this the culprit? How can I get it fixed?

Thanks!

That should be an okay electrical connection. As long as the wires are connected, it's probably an issue on the crossover board. Have you looked at it to make sure there aren't any loose connections?

Do your 5B's happen to have a fuse on the back? If so, the contacts may be oxidized. However, I believe most if not all of the 5B had polyswitches instead of fuses.

Try swapping speakers left and right to see if the low output follows the speaker. If it does, then it is an issue with the speaker. If it doesn't then it is a connection or amp issue. Check speaker cable connections at the speaker and amp. Disconnect, clean oxidation and reconnect.

Try a different pair of known good speakers to see if the problem is your 5B or the amp/connection.

Try going fairly high volume on the amp momentarily. If it clears and restores output then you have an issue with the amp. This seems to happen frequently with older equipment.
