Uhh… is this a “normal” repair?

Sorry, never mind… I bought a spare set of Monitor 7 crossovers off eBay, just in case I tanked this crossover upgrade. They came with tweeters which were SL2000. I stuck them on the bench next to the peerless tweeters and confused them. 🙄

Let's see the front. Maybe you have the earlier Audax Tweeter. But I don't think so because of the location of the terminals being not central and that is a Peerless number and Peerless speaker cutout, although I've never seen the cutout for the Audax.

Okay but I'm afraid that crossover will be different from the Peerless crossover 😢

    1. Yes
    2. The hurricane nuts are 8-32. The 1/4-20 size is thread pattern for the spikes Polk used on their larger SDA speakers.
    3. Just the spokes is plenty.
    4. Cardas CCGR S
    5. Film/poly caps will always have larger voltage values, nature of the beast. The 250V version is fine. 400V caps will be even larger in diameter.

Yeah, I figured they would be. They don’t have fuses so they are for later 7s. But then I figured if I messed up on my own, I’d be paying somebody with knowledge and experience to rebuild them and they could work whatever magic they needed to get the spare set right for 7A’s. 😬

Thanks for the replies. That clears up and confirms a lot of what I was thinking. I’m expecting I’ll be ok with the crossovers. I’m not in a rush at this point and just plan on taking my time and thinking through it. “Plan twice, solder once,” so to speak.

Right now my plan is to maybe just do the capacitors first, use higher stand offs, and put them underneath the board so everything fits. I saw some pics where somebody did that and it made sense. But that could change.

I also saw F1nut’s 7B FS post from a few years ago and that crossover set-up looks really slick, but seems a bit daunting for my skill level compared to just replacing what’s already on the OEM board.

That was point to point wired, very easy.

Do the resistors while doing the caps. Sort of defeats the purpose of upgrading the crossovers if you don't.

Finally decided I need to buck up and get solder on these parts and before I knew it, I was done. (One crossover anyway.). I won’t show you my solder joints because I won’t win any awards. Appreciate the help. Currently armacell’ing everything. I need some connectors to join the wires back together but then I’ll do a comparison of old and new (presuming the new one doesn’t catch on fire or something.) 😬😂

Soldering is a skill I haven’t really used since an electronics class in middle school. lol!

It occurred to me as I was looking at a schematic and my pics before disassembly (which ultimately kept confusing me) that I could just pull the other crossover and look at that. 😂

Fired up the new and old speakers, and first, the rebuilt crossover didn’t catch fire, so… good start. 😂 Listened to 5 or 6 songs I know pretty well and yeah, I gotta say, the difference between the two is pretty clear… as in, the new one is literally clearer. Vocals are clear, the snare drum “snappy”, mid-range instruments are much easier to hear individually. Bass doesn’t have so much “thuddiness.” The difference is obvious when evenly balanced and even more obvious switching from one channel to the other. Some dynamat arrives tomorrow so I’ll get those baskets done, then get started on the second speaker. The Armacell is nice stuff and yeah, it does seal really well. I skipped the hurricane nuts, but maybe I’ll do them at some point.

A crossover rebuild is worth doing, especially if your speakers are sounding flat. And hey, my soldering skills are minimal, but I got it done (no, I’m not showing my work… it’s probably pretty embarrassing). 😂 If I do this with my RTA 8t’s, I’ll use Clarity Caps. Not sure I’d want to spend Soniccap money if I were doing this again, but I’m glad I got the experience of doing it. Thanks again for all the guidance!

Congrats on your project. Once your done check to see if you have any leaks in the cabinets. Push in on passive gently & hold it IN. Watch the woofer come out. If it stays out for 3-5 seconds your fine. If it goes back to resting position sooner you have a leak somewhere.

    HUGE mistake, do them now.

    Congrats on your project.

Thanks… I’m in a job where nobody is ever particularly happy with me, so getting to think through something like this, dust off some old, unused skills, and get it done is a pleasant and positive diversion (besides the sound benefits to rebuilt crossovers). Have appreciated this forums willingness to answer questions (that I’m sure are often asked over and over).

I did that when I was Dx’ing some sound issues pre-upgrade, but I suppose I should do it again to make sure. Thanks!

I wasn’t really inclined to pay shipping on just 50 hurricane nuts so I found an excuse to buy other stuff from Parts Express to get up to free shipping. Lol!

I think that's what everyone does! I know my wife loves it when I do that (i.e., buy stuff I don't need to get free shipping), especially with hifi parts. :#
