RTA-12C

I picked up a pair of these speakers yesterday that are in really excellent condition overall, but the tweeters (SL 2000) on both speakers aren't functioning at all. There's no fuse on the crossovers so is there any other obvious reason why both tweeters would quit working? javh9mltuwpm.jpg

Yep they're blown, have you disconnected them and tested them with multi-tester? First thing you need to do. If in fact they are you can order RD-0194-1 tweeters from polk customer service. Tell them you're a member here for a small discount.
IF they are out you should be able to order some from speaker exchange but there will be no discount. The replacement tweeter is a much better tweeter than the sl2000

It couldn't hurt to check your polyswitches (blue device in red circle), especially since they are so accessible. Try jumpering them and see what happens.

Thanks for the quick replies, Pittdogg and George. Working on electronics is well outside of my comfort zone so this gives me something that even I am capable of investigating. Since I'm only in these for $50, I don't mind buying new tweeters. I just would like to get them operating as they should before spending the money on crossover upgrades and other improvements.

Well if you test the tweeter unhooked with a multi-tester set to ohms, that will give you an indication whether or not the poly switch is bad. if the multi tester shows nothing tweeter is bad. if it shows a reading of 7 or higher then in all likelyhood your PS is fried. EITHER way that PS is going bye bye with new XO IN most cases. They're nasty, if you have GOOD amplification that are not needed. IF you want to run them on a receiver welll maybe you will need a new one. We highly discourage in a vast majority of cases.

Thanks George. I'm sure once fixed that these will prove to be capable replacements for my Sansui SP-3500s.

These would be ideal to take the polyswitch out of the circuit for testing. Get the style with the hooks.

Gardenstater and Pittdogg, an update on my speakers and the diagnosis. The tweeters were indeed blown and so I purchased the RD0194-1 replacements, which arrived in the mail today. The speakers are joyous to listen to and while I liked my Sansui’s old school style, these Polks just blow them out of the water in sound. It just completely changes sound from my Pioneer SX-939. Thanks both of you for helping me sort out the issue.

Now an update to my update. I’ve evidently have already blown my right tweeter again. Since my listening room doubles as my wife’s office and she’s working while I listen to music, it wasn’t because I cranked it up too loud. What do I have going on that would have caused this so quickly?

Maybe the polyswitch has tripped because it is old and faulty. Try jumping it out like I was suggesting and also do as pitdogg suggested and test the tweeter with an ohmmeter.

Has your Pioneer SX-939 ever been serviced?

Okay, I’m back in business. When it was trying to fit the hat back on there, I must have somehow dislodged the connector from the crossover to the speaker. I had to walk away in frustration a bit but came back to it and sorted it out. Thanks again for your help and suggestions.

@BradM You need something bigger to power them speakers. Be very careful on the volume dial. Hopefully you don't have a bad update to follow
