Picked up a Sencore LC53 with some issues.

The leakage switch was stuck on. Easy fix, tweak the spring and exercise it a bit.

Missing the test cable. An ebay seller has the correct low capacitance cable. Use the wrong cable and you won't be able to zero the meter or get accurate readings on low capacitance parts.

The rear panel zero pot was twitchy. Disassemble, clean, reassemble.

The front panel zero pot was also twitchy. Disassemble, clean, reassemble.

All good! These are great to test old or verify a new 20pf part is actually a 20pf part.

Is that hot melt glue? Is there going to be a top?

  • xschop
    xschop Posts: 5,000
That there is Gorilla Glue. No top needed, just keeping it simple. The spuds don't allow the coils to unravel.

Again, can't find @VR3 reply whether I can run billet alloy through center or lay on an alloy spud like that. I'd like to mount the small tweeter inductor sideways with an alloy spud.

Why would you do that? That would change the electrical properties, no?

We can run non-ferrous bolts thru the Dreadnaught. correct? What's the difference?

I have seen inductors mounted with brass bolts before but I think you need to account for changes with the bolt inserted. Metals will change parameters but you can always order larger values and such and wind to match

So, can I just use an LCR meter and test the exact same inductor (0.4mH) to see if it moved after alloy rod inserted?

Yes, as long as your specs match and then you place them correctly around other inductors you should be fine

Aluminum has a dramatic effect on inductors... To be a 2.4mh you may need to order a 5mh or higher an unwind if using aluminum or any type of steel

I'll make one and test on the inductor center and see. The alloy definitely has no bearing on capacitance: just tested a Silver Dragon...

I think with changing signals there can be eddy currents generated in the aluminum that will induce losses. The associated fields from those currents can change the dynamic behavior of the inductor.

    Just an example..

Inductor 5/8 of an inch from 1/8" aluminum produces a 5% change in mh reading downwards

I know what the alloy focus rings do to the small voice coils, was not sure what effect the alloy would have on large inductors. I'll machine an alloy and plastic spud to test, but plan on permanently attaching the plastic spud then. Building a set of XS-CRS+ x-overs to mount externally, so aesthetics is a concern. Thanks for all input.

After a lot of planning and work, ended up with the stand I was looking for:
    gqfp7mcwceeu.jpeg

We ended up with 2” maple for all 3 slabs.

I ended up deciding to keep the front edge a live edge, I just ended up liking it that way.

We had 3 matching slabs. They went to the miller to have them flattened and the very last slab caught in the machine and chewed the hell out the last 8” of material.

My buddy ended up finding a sugar maple slab in his stash that a perfect dimension to we decided to make it the “cap” or topping slab, live edge on both sides.

I can press it flat’ish, but we decided it was probably best to send it off to be milled, in the near future.

  • I finally bit the bullet and got another Sunfire Cinema grand Signature to replace my old one. I got excellent service out of it for over a decade, but the left rear channel went out. Which is what caused me to change my pre/pro thinking it was that. Now I have Dolby Atmos/DTS X/Auro 3D with the Marantz 8805a. I didn't even have to reconfigure my system or move anything, because I had the predecessor to Dolby Atmos called Dolby Pro Logic IIz. As well as the predecessor to DTS X called DTS Neo x. When I installed the Marantz and discovered the left rear channel STILL wasn't working, I felt like an idiot because I THOUGHT I had properly traced the problem to it's source.
    Obviously not
I was thinking about putting the Sunfire in the shop, but didn't want to deal with the system being down for many months. So I got another one that is slightly newer (you COULD call it a Series III) and just put my old one up for auction on eBay.
  • This is AMAZING in Dolby Atmos!

I had to go to eBay Europe to find this in Auro 3D.
The American 🇺🇸 copies were all Dolby. Eventually I’m gonna try it out

YES I still have my Laserdisc player (well now I have two of the same-long story) I am back to enjoying them. This is one of only 9 titles that were released on Laserdisc 💿 in Dolby Digital EX 6.1
    I have 8 of them.
