Did you add a tape deck to your system? I know you were considering it.

Every time I open up the Studer service manual (330 pages) I appreciate something new.

IIRC you told me the wires also don't change colors in a circuit unlike some R2R manufacturers.

Automotive stethoscopes are a very handy, simple inexpensive tool. I used one when setting up my Lenco TT motor end play and adjusting the field coils for minimum vibration.

    Awesome work, highest marks!

I think Studer engineers would rather jump off a bridge than use different colored wires for the same connection to different parts. There is a complete section, in the service manual, that describes what each and every subsection of the deck uses for wire colors. A complex alpha numeric system that tells where a signal starts and where it goes. It's pretty impressive.
I really am reluctant to unplug the timer, it just seems wrong to do it. Almost blasphemous. Hard to explain.

My tube pre has an hour meter so I don't have to manually track tube hours. I'm thinking the on timer would be great for following any lube intervals.

The Teac 4010S manual is like brief reminder notes for the guy that designed it.

In recording studios, radio broadcasting and tape duplication Studer's main competitors were Telefunken in Europe and Ampex and Scully in the US. And for any of these businesses having fully working tape recorders was a must. They couldn't afford to not have their machines working. This combined with complex multi-track recording meant any deck not earning its keep was a serious liability. This meant any service guy had to be able to diagnose the problem, undo a few screws and plug in a new part. No time for unsoldering components and rat's nest wiring harnesses, the down time had to be minutes not hours or days.
On recorders like Stellavox you take off the bottom plate and everything is easy to replace modules.

Interesting. Same concept when I worked mil aircraft and communications. In the aerospace industry, components designed like this are called LRU's (Line Replaceable Unit) and repaired off-equipment (vs on-equipment) via a backshop, depot or contract facility. Exactly as you stated...essentially plug-and-play w/the end result a quick turnaround of the weapons system. As an analyst, my job was to look for high failures, conduct predictive analysis and, ultimately, influence quality (reliability) and supply/logistics of these parts.

One really cool way to customize your tape deck is with special take up reels. A generous Club Polk member sent me this beautiful Studer A80 reel that really looks sharp. What a great gift!

Nice accent color! High marks on those NAB hubs. Very classy. I was looking at some polished black ones, but those....

Is that a custom-made dust cover?

Yes, a local plastics fabricator made it. There are some folks who make some wild reels.

Reels no longer have to be utilitarian in design. You can get them in any color and style.

Anodized trumpets for NAB hubs are available in any color.

For those who wish to make a 'reel' statement, there is carbon fiber....

I'm waiting for the Chinese to offer LED NAB hubs.

Remember when Hagerman offered the UFO LED record clamp?
