Monitor 10 damaged crossover and upgrade

Hi all, I just got my stereo back from my tech. When I got home he told me to ohm out my speakers to make sure nothing blew on them. The top fuse post on my right speaker wouldn't ohm out and the fuse is good. So I opened the cross over and found the yellow one wasn't ohming out. Would that be the cause or is there a deeper problem? That being said does anyone know of any upgrade kits worth getting or do I have to buy the individual parts? I figure if I gotta replace one thing might as well upgrade it all. I've attached photos below.ob2lipsc77de.jpg

Looks like you've found that fuse on top to be bad, if it doesn't give an ohm reading close to zero but shows open. The yellow thing is a mylar film capacitor in series with the tweeter though and capacitors don't pass DC current, which is how your ohmmeter functions. It shouldn't ohm out. It should show as open on your meter. If you get conductivity then it is shorted out/bad though. Otherwise, to test it you'd need a capacitance meter and more advanced would be a meter that gives Dissipation Factor and Effective Series Resistance.

Could be a bad fuse but also might just be a dirty connection between the fuse and fuse holder, especially if you probed the fuse holder and not the fuse. Check the fuse itself for continuity. Had an issue with one of my Monitor 7's. Removing and re-installing the fuse fixed it right up.
  • @Gardenstater thanks for the reply. I tested the fuse outside of the speaker and it tested fine. The top fuse post doesn't show anything when it's in tho.

The fuse holders are pretty dirty, try cleaning them. The other could be corroded wire at the fuse holder, it's been known to happen with the age of the speakers. Others have found corrosion of the copper under the jacket of the wire in the past.

    Something to think of.
