Receiver setup question

My Yamaha receiver (as almost all halfway decent HT receivers) have the inputs for the video as well as the audio (as you all know!)
I've never run my video thru my home theater receiver. I've always connected it directly. My Sony Wega has enough inputs for this.
My question is this: what are the advantages of connecting your video thru your home theater receiver?

some receivers have an On screen display, for settings, on screen volume, things like that. this requires that you add your reciever to the video circuit instead of going directly to your tv. this will let you use the menu's
you can do like i did and go directly to your tv from your dvd player or whatever the source is, and then with a seperate audio cable go from your receiver to your tv, to use the menu's you just have to switch the video setting on the tv. for instance video 1 on my tv is to watch a dvd and video 2 is to change any settings on my receiver. -
I never even thought of that! Thanks for the suggestion:D
