My monitor 10bs woofers stopped working, can I replace with series 4 woofers?

So my drunken friend turned the volume nob all the way up last night and the woofers stopped working. I'm not sure what got fried but after testing it's definitely the speaker and not the amp. I'm now going to open up the speakers and see if I can find the issue. If it is the woofers I'm thinking of getting some cheap monitor 4s that they're selling close by and swapping the woofers would that work? It might be the crossover though, they produce no sound whatsoever but twitter is fine

The various Monitor models have specific mid-drivers. You cannot swap them willy-nilly. Pull the mid-drivers out of your Monitor 10 and you will find the MWxxxx model info on the back.

    FYI, it's a tweeter, not a twitter.

Nothing looks obviously burnt out but the driver does smell a little weird. But I'm not sure if that's the problem :/ would you recommend swapping swapping them out on the one speaker that does work to see if it's the drivers? Or is that stupid? Are there replacements for the mw6503?

If you have an ohmmeter they should measure 6.54 Ohms. Probably yours will read infinite/open.

If you don't have a meter it makes perfect sense to swap the drivers.

I see them for sale on eBay pretty frequently. Saw one just the other day that was being sold as an MW6500 but you don't want that one because it had a damaged surround.

Ok confirmed both 6503s on one of the speakers are dead. Is there any homemade way I can test if there's other issues in the crossover? I'm guessing placing the working drivers on the other speaker might be risking them ? Do they sell updated replacements of that driver model?

So you didn't completely swap...you only put the bad ones in the other speaker and found that speaker now didn't work?

If you want to make sure the crossover wasn't damaged you will have to do combined visual inspection and testing with a meter followed by attempting to play the good drivers in that speaker.

There is a made in China copy that you can get but I don't know of anyone who has tried them. I'd go original used. If you went with the so called copy drivers you would certainly want to replace all 4 because I seriously doubt that they are going to sound the same as the vintage Polks.

Ok I'm going to get a meter to test the crossovers today, what should I look for? Are there any threads that discuss this? Sorry if the question seems obvious but it's my first time doing this
  • Usually any problems with a speaker's crossover can be seen as components that are scorched or blackened. Resistors especially will look cooked as will the areas of the circuit board close to where the part is attached. Sometimes capacitors will looked damaged or sometimes blown apart.
