Sub/speaker matching for stereo listening?

My friend asked:

'How do I match a sub up to my system?'

So, I did what any person who wants to maintain the aura of competency does: I googled for him, I searched for wisdom here, and now I'm wondering if I would benefit from a pair, too. Curse him =[

I told him all the basic things: a sloppy HT sub just won't do, consider a front-firing speaker over a down-firing one, speed is important (so the amp needs to be better than the average consumer plate unit), placement might be tricky, the die-hard stereo sub-folk seem to prefer matched pairs.

I also told him I've got my old 10" Klipsch down-firing one, if he just wants thump.

Now I'm curious.

Anyone use the new Polk subs paired to their speakers nowadays?

A pair of the better 12" with anything?

I might give my Klipsch to my friend. I don't use it. Plus, he doesn't listen all snooty-like, like I do now ;)

[thinks]

Now that my 1C are on the long wall of a 27x15 room, I might could use a little low-end bolster? Or is it that inexperience with subs-and-stereo popping up?

  • Velodyne, check. Added to watch list. Thank you.

I guess it's a shame Polk's subs are HT units, and don't match with their speakers? With all the good of the R and L series, I thought (maybe) their subs were also a great value =(

Brian said he was pleasantly surprised with the Polk subs he used his discount code on, iirc? I haven't heard the new ones.

Another thumbs for Velodyne DD+. Even the 10 will kick you in the sack pack. That's what I use in my big weird room. My speakers are on the long wall, too, and this puts me in a bass null. The sub says, null schmull.

I've also had pleasing results with the MartinLogan Abyss and Grotto.

Along with Velodyne, SVS, HSU this is another player back in the game that is getting some excellent reviews and feedback. RSL speedwoofer is a very affordable subwoofer. It's on the larger side so that my be a negative. It also digs deep.

  • msg/pitt: Noted! I'll pass the names on to friend Rich. He can afford to move up on the purchase scale if he wants more than my freebie, and now I've got a nice list to look out for.

As far as matching subs to stereo, any tips? Other than make sure it has that elusive musicality?

SVS makes a selector tool. For SDA-1C one recommendation in their tool is an SB-4000. I'd recommend a pair of them, because two are better than one. :D

I like their sealed subwoofers more than their ported subwoofers for two channel music but there's nothing wrong with their ported subwoofers either apart from them being huge.

My favorite for two channel is the Rel S/ series, namely an S/510 pair for most rooms. They cost a fair bit but should last through many main speaker upgrades.
