Help figuring this out
My Denon X3800H can do 5.4.6 or 7.4.4 max..
And my head can't figure out the puzzle in my head with wanting to combind 2 sets of speakers.
Would normally never think of mixing speaker models but from what I'm hearing, all that matters is a matching the front 3.
So all would be Polk Audio.
Front L & R LSiM 705
Center LSiM 706C
Side Surrounds LSiM 702
Front Heights?? LSiM 703 bookshelf x2.
Then I have older LSi:
LSi 15 x2 towers.. was thinking rear back surrounds.
LSiFX x 2 Bipole/Dipole speakers
LSiC center speaker.
I also have a set of 900LS ceiling speakers..
Honestly.. my mind is stuck thinking about using the FX and or 702 /Bipole speakers as height speakers.. as like possibly hanging on the ceiling flat.. using that 45 degree sides point downward at the MLP.
I'm guessing since their bipoles it prob wouldn't be a good idea.. but that angle it would have seems just like what everyone wants as in pointing their ceiling speakers at a 45 degree angle.
So I could do 703 for front heights, 900LS for middle and LSiFX as rear heights..
Even going weird with thinking about buying another LSiC center speaker and hanging them as heights haha.

Yes.. but currently thoughts of just using my single sub SVS PB-Ultra 16.. later doubling them up.
So 5.1.6 or 7.1.4.Full 5 channel set of Polk Audio

Height speakers for Atmos soundtracks should ideally all be in ceiling to pan effects from the front of the room to the rear seamlessly. Second best is modules designed with drivers that direct sound at an angle to bounce off the ceiling to the listening area. Side and rear surrounds should be at seated ear level like the front main speakers. That type of system can be very immersive if done right.
Height speakers are really effects speakers now with a specific purpose and arrangement. They're not just speakers hung up around the ceiling. Of course someone can choose to put regular bookshelf speakers high up but they'd have to be aimed at the listening spot to do anything useful. -

Eventually you should get another pair of 900LS for the full 7.x.4 setup. I personally rock 7.2 right now and it's awesome, with plans of going 9.4.6 eventually. 9 channel doesn't really provide much of a difference unless it's Atmos and you have another seat (like I will). -

Yes, we are aware of how it's supposed to be done for Atmos/DTS-X.
The bed layer of 5 or 7 would all be ear height.
It's the height channels we're trying to figure out
The reciever gives the option for heights as Front Height/Front Tops, Middle Tops and Rear Heights/Rear Tops.. a combo of Heights or Tops or both.
All the above would be pointed at the sweet spot somehow.. bookshelf speaker wall brackets ideally. Or make something.
If I was to do 6 heights I already have a pair of ceiling 900LS to match the setup I would use for middle.. so 703 bookshelfs for front heights angled at the MLP and then the fun of figuring out the Rear Heights.
No one has ever taken a fx surround with those 45 degree side angles and mounted them flat to the ceiling with the tweeters pointed down at the MLP??
Though the LSi FX speakers have tweeters on both sides. The LSiM 702s the tweeter is only on one side and also has an extra woofer in the middle panel.. blank on the other end..
Then wondering why ya cant use a center speaker as a height channel?? Grab another used one and maybe use that as a Rear height channel. Obviously somehow mounted above and angled to the MLP.
Just thinking outside of the box.. to save money and using what I got instead of paying a boatload to ship used speakers.
Cheapest option would be to buy a LSiC.. over grabbing a set of LSi7s or 9s online.. people want alot for a pair of 703 bookshelf speakers of you can find them used online.
Plus now those FX surround speakers are unwanted for atmos setups. They want you to use bookshelf for surround channels now.. I'm sure monopole speakers are best but would using a bipole speaker flat on the ceiling sound OK if the tweeter was angled the same way?

I think ChrisD06 is on the right path. A single pair of in ceiling speakers is all that's really needed to start with for height effect panning. It's the accurate panning of the sound from front to rear and back that is most important. Think about an aircraft flying overhead from behind and how that sounds.
That setup would yield a much cleaner and coherent soundfield than trying to use additional speakers in unusual spots that just end up cancelling out and muddying much of the sound hitting the listening space. -

Ok, I guess that is the obvious correct answer.
Then I'll have to sell off the LSi 5.1 setup as I'll have no use for them.. bought used and not in great physical shape.

I'd personally actually change the LSiM 703 to the 702 f/x as well wayyy down the line, but it's not something I'd even consider optional, it's purely OCD. The LSi 5.1 setup could be used in another room. If you have no use for them then I'd let them go.
Also for subs: SVS, HSU, PSA, Monoprice Monolith. Don't worry about timbre matching subwoofers, you don't need to. Depending on your room size 4 of them is absolutely insane. Either go for 2 larges ones at the front, one in each corner (6-12 inches from the wall on both sides!) or 4 smaller ones in each corner.
