I've had a pair of Niles OS-20 speakers for years now. One is sounding bad and not sure if I can find somebody around here to service it.

Thinking it may be time to buy another pair, what have you heard that made you take notice on how good they sounded? I recall hearing some Polks at a brewery that impressed me but didn't bother to determine what model they were.

Yep, my name really is Bob.

I actually really like the daytons from parts express. I have both these: https://www.parts-express.com/Dayton-Audio-IO655BT-6-1-2-2-Way-70V-Indoor-Outdoor-Speaker-310-016?quantity=1

And the ones with a passive radiator. Don’t notice much of a difference, but both are very nice sounding for outdoor speakers. I bought mine because @steveinaz recommended them years ago fwiw…

Hark, a shootout is on the horizon. I just ordered the Dayton IO8XTB, the Klipsch AW-650, and the Def Tech AW6500. I have heard Atriums and been pleased with their punch, but the port on the back is a no-go for me. Mud daubers are pretty rampant around here, so I need a port protected by a grill, or a PR.

They’ll be fighting to replace my SDA SRS 2s in my shop, so it should be interesting to see which gets it done

I install lots of outdoor speakers professionally. B&W AM1 is a nice patio speaker, but they break if you toss any volume at them.
Sonance Mariners are awesome but are $880 a pair.
    Communities are stupid.

A pair I've installed for a buddy and blow me away are these Klipsch AW650. They sound great and will fill a space/yard with no problem no matter where you place them.

I've heard Atriums before and was impressed by them all-around, however they were unfortunately ruled out due to the port location. We have a serious mud dauber problem in the summers, so I need a port that's protected by a grill, or a PR. Otherwise, the daubers will either fill the inside of the speaker with their dirt nests, or (more likely) plug the port. The exposed PR of the Dayton is still a bit risky compared to the Klipsch and Def Tech as they could build a nest on it or its surround, but that's easier to resolve than a plugged PowerPort or filled cabinet.

The Klipsch AW-650s showed up yesterday. The DTs are en route and should arrive Tuesday, and the Daytons are on backorder until a week from now (8/25), so it'll be next weekend at the earliest before I can pull this all together. I also am buying some switches to create a way to do instant A/B/C comparisons. I haven't decided how I plan on powering them yet. I have a handful of receivers from Kenwood, Denon, and Onkyo, a Sansui 4000, and a Kenwood KA-X1 left over from my late parents home. That X1 system was the bomb. I haven't decided on LFE either. Originally I wanted to do an Othorn with an Eminence NSW6021, but I am concerned by the daubers and wonder if I can even grill a sub that powerful without it affecting the sound. My second thought was to use 2-4 Dayton RSS390HOs with a pair of PRs for each.

Anywho, cheers. I hope you're not all melting in this heat. The shop was unbearable yesterday afternoon.

I have the DT 6500's mounted to the 1st floor joists in my basement shop. They sound good, but bass is lacking. I think if you mounted them outside under an overhang, the extra boundary would fix it. Though no longer in production, I have JBL 26AW's on my deck. Probably been out there almost 20 years. Sound great and will take all the power you can throw at them.

Minor update: I needed to get the Klipsch box out of the way so I figured I'd toss them on my receiver. Compared to the SDA SRS 2, the highs are absolutely grating and there's no bass. There's nothing about them that has me impressed at the moment. I don't even have an SDA crossover cable and they're still miles ahead at the moment. I hope the others do something, otherwise I might just nix this endeavor altogether.

The Definitive Technology AW6500 showed up yesterday. I hooked them up for a brief moment, and can already attest to the fact that they perform well above the Klipsch.

My Daytons should arrive next week, once they're here I'll bust out the OmniMic and take measurements, as well as mount all three and give them an honest A/B/C heads up listening test.

While that may keep the daubers out, I wouldn't be surprised in the slightest if they plugged up the port regardless. You wouldn't believe the stuff I see them fill.

Sonance Mariners suck, the grills constantly fall off AND the fix for them is to drill them and screw the grills in from the sides. I'm all out on Sonance speakers completely, all of them in ceiling in wall Outdoors Hate them all.

I've tried the artium 6 myself as my surrounds. Used them as a trail for Dolby atmos overhead speakers.

For music they sounded high and trebbly.
For my surrounds they also sounded a bit trebbly and the sound was dispersed so I was struggle to tell where the audio is coming from. There was moments the audio I could tell but it's mostly down tho the soundmix

    I have a pair of atrium 6’s and 8’s …

Currently , Boston Acoustics Voyager 70’s are doing duty on my patio while the Polks are in a closet .
Better balanced speaker , and better bass in my opinion.

My next pair of outdoor speakers - when needed - will be the Revel M80XC….
Absolutely phenomenal - pricey , but Revel didn’t cut any corners with ‘em…..

So, I finally got around to contacting Niles Audio support inquiring about their lifetime warranty. Apparently this comes into effect post 2007, my OS20 speakers are a bit older than that so no go.

Interesting that they did not suggest another Niles product, but rather a Proficient AW650 as a replacement. Never hear of that brand and can't seem to find any reviews.

So I figured I would try Parts Express. Customer service hooked me up with a near exact fit with one major exception. While I thought maybe the mounting holes may not line up exactly, they actually do. The problem is the small studs in the cabinet are too short due to the thicker rubber gasket around the woofer. I tried to unscrew one with vice grips and the stud broke. So now I'm going to try and glue the woofer in place. Would JB Weld work to fasten the speaker to the plastic cabinet or the metal studs?
