Good CD for low frequency stuff

Hey guys, I was just going through my CD collection organizing stuff when I came across the Sarah Mclauchlin (sp?) Surfacing CD (it's the one with that angel song on it).

Anyway, I was about to put in in the pile of stuff I'm giving to my brother and thought I'd see what's on it.

HOLY FREAKIN ****!!

There is some low stuff on that CD, on several tracks. I think track 2 was the best, but several good tracks on there, for bass response anyway.

There's nothing that you have not heard before in movie soundtracks...but this stuff is unusually low for music, at least in my experience.

Anyway, just thought I'd share...

Is there a way I can tell what frequency something is? I'd like to know what range that low stuff on track 2 is...

Also, the paula Cole CD has a track called Tiger on it...also really good low freq stuff, with a bit of a kick also...

Anyone else know of good CDs for low freq. stuff? Not those bass CDs either, just regular music...

Most of it is centered around 40 and 60hz, but does extend down to near 20hz. see link below:

Not sure how you feel about orchestral music, but of course there is much out there with a lot of bass. Mahler's 2nd symphony, or 5th would be good starters. Herbert von Karajan's early 80's recording of Strauss's Also Sprach Zarathustra is about as low as you can get on CD (the opening is the intro from 2001: A Space Odyssey, in case you are unfamiliar with that piece.) Another piece very heavy in bass is Hans Zimmer's score for Gladiator. Put that on, turn up the volume, and just sit back and listen. The pictures will fall off the walls.
For rock, I think The Who has a lot of great bass, the new 2CD best of set rocks. Also, a lot of U2's stuff from the 80's and 90's has a good deal of bass, thanks to their excellent bass player. A couple songs I really like for bass: With or Without You, Beautiful Day, Electrical Storm. That's just a few. Happy listening.

On the heavier side of things, Linkin Park "Reanimation" has tons of low bass, most of which I think is synthesizers.
Bob Mayo, on the keyboards. Bob Mayo.

Bela Fleck and the Flecktones are fun to listen too also. Victor Wooten is one HECK of a bass player.

Here's a shot of the bass from a Bela Fleck song called "Flight of the Cosmic Hippo"

For some acoustic rock, check out the Pat McGee Band's General Admission disc. It is a pretty decent live recording of a couple of concerts and trolls deep on the bass guitar through the CD. Steve in AZ was quite pleased with the results of this CD on his SVS. Plus, the bass on this CD really does have that "live" sound to it. Thick with lots of "growl" on the deep stuff but accurate toney on the high end of the bass guitar. The bassist is very good on top of all that. The Tosh DVDP really lived the bass up on my system as well.

"Clarity" on John Mayer's ]Heavier Things has some nice bass. I think they are using some kind of massive kick drum or something with a similar but noticeably deeper hit.

Incubus's Morning View has some really nice bass guitar action as well. Not to mention it is a surprisingly well recorded CD. Best drum set imaging I've yet to hear on track 11.

I'll think of some more ina little while.

I love this soundtrack for evaluating subwoofers. The bass is constantly changing in instrument, texture, and detail. It isn't super strong, but it is rather deep (25-30 Hz) in certain spots.

This is probably THE best use of bass I have heard as the emotional foundation for a music movement. This entire soundtrack is genius. Hearing it on the PB2-Ultra will bring a tear to your eye.

Zimmer talks about composing it on the Gladiator DVD extra disc and it was a real treat listening to him describe the different themes (and variations thereof) that comprise the entire soundtrack.
