Anyone know if PS2 can use the 5.1 surround capabilities? I usually hook my friend's in through my front audio/video (video 5) on my receiver.

Any help here would be greatly appreciated.

    games no, movies yes.

You will not, to my knowledge, be able to use the optical out for anything other than movies. But i know for a fact the the PS2 games are not capable of producing dd5.1.

As a matter of fact you can use the optical out for games also. You need to make sure you enable it in the setup menu.

There are however a few games that are using DTS audio with utilizing 4.1 sound. SSX Tricky is one that I know of off hand.

    dcorrea - sporting the knowledge.

Man where do you guys come up with your PS2 info? No digital sound for games...... PS2 rocks in the sound department.
SSX3 has some of the best sound in a gaming system I have even heard.
    PS2 DTS Digital Sound
As with all gaming systems sound is only limited to the sound quality implimented in the game itself.
I have been using optical since day one - and I don't watch movies on it.;)

Scottvamp...thanks for the information and you are 100% correct. I mainly play Madden 2004 and just got done looking at the EA site. The game does indeed support 5.1 so I am going to try it out this weekend.

Now all I need is my virtual reality suit and helmet... :)

I thought the PS2 was compatible with Dolby 5.1, but with games only capable of playback of Dolby 5.1 tracks during cut scenes and not during game play. Does Madden 2004 have Dolby 5.1 sound effects during game play? I thought only two channel PCM was available during game play (output to a receiver for Dolby Pro Logic). I know the XBox does have the hardware to support Dolby 5.1 during game play.

There are games that only support dd 5.1 during cut scenes. Metal Gear Solid is a prime example. I dont know about Madden 04 though. There are games that do support DTS during actual gameplay.

I suppose that PS2 has DD EX on games and movies. I'm not completely sure, but I have a Xbox, and when ever I play games, my reciever switches from PLII over to DD EX.
Sooner or later you're going to realize, just as I did, there's a difference between knowing the path...and walking it.

SOCOM2 supports surround sound, though I've never actually checked that the voices are from the center channel (not much dialogue in the game). I was playing it last night (over optical out) and looked upward toward a helicopter. I then used the "look" stick to kinda spin in a circle, and the sound of the helicopter distinctly panned around the four corner speakers. Next time I play, I'll check the center channel, but for sure the other 4 and the sub are active and directional during gameplay.
