Sunday afternoon was depressing to say the least, our chocolate lab started getting sick about three days before this and had started to improve but by sunday the tables turned and she took a turn for the worse. Her breathing had started to become very labored and she would not drink anything and refused to take her meds. In about an hour from that the breathing become even more shallow and she was laying on the floor and had become somewhat lathargic.

Called my dad to come down to help me get her in the van to take her to the emergency clinc, she did respond some when we were loading her up. Dad drove and I layed in the floor beside of her at one point she tried to stand up but could barely hold herself so I made here lay back down, at that point I asked dad if he had broke wind, he had not she had passed a massive amount of blood at which point breathing became very rapid and shallow.

I deciced it was just a matter of time so I leaned over and held her with my head near hers and gave her permission to let go, I figure she was just as scared as I was and that some last time love from me was the right thing to do. I held her until she took har last breath and then it was over just like that. Took her on to the clinic and she left us due to a preforated bowel, more than likely this was a result of her having i.b.d ( irritable bowel disease) which she was diagnosed with about 2 1/2 years ago. I guess she was a ticking time bomb.

Dad helped me lay her to rest on their back lot sunday evening and was I guess the hardest thing I have had to do in a long, long time, I had to let dad cover her so I could not see her before I could even help him.

She followed the wife(she cried all night over her) everywhere she went in the house and was her shadow, she loved to take road trips in the van and go camping as well. The kids loved her so much and she loved them right back even when she was sick, her playmate ( golden retriever) is lost without her and so am I. If I can get the image scanned I will try and post a pic of our sweet pup.

Mike - I feel for your loss. She could not have had a better life without you and your family...take comfort in that fact. You honor her memory with your posting of the events.

I am sorry about your loss Mike. It sounds to me like she had a very happy life with your family and she was lucky to have people who cared for her so much. Try to focus on the pleasant memories to help with the pain. I lost my best friend 4 years ago.

    Mike,
I'm very sorry for your family's loss. I'd be happy to send a contribution, in your pet's name, to a local animal rescue group, here in Baltimore called Alley Animals. They'll print your dog's name in their newsletter.
    Take care, Ken

Real sorry about that, Mike. Like everybody else has said, sounds like she had a really good life with you and your family. I'm not sure how I'd handle it if my dog went.

ya know, before when I heard of this happening to other people, I USED to think "JEEZ, it was JUST A DOG!", or whatever type of pet it may have been.....that is, BEFORE I GOT A DOG two years ago. Now that I have one, I can truly appreciate the emotional pain a family would be going through when this happens. It took less than 24 hours after picking my pup up from the breeder for me to realize what a huge loss it will be when he checks out, hopefully not for at least 15 more years.

Very sorry to hear the sad news.

Thanks to all of you for the heart felt and kind words, lacey was as about as perfect a dog as you could ever want to have. Ken thanks a million, I would be honered for her name to appear in their paper and I know the contribution would be put to good use. We rescued lacey from some folks that just did not give a rats rear about her, and I would do it again in a heartbeat.

I surely do miss her greeting me at the window, and then the door. I even miss her ears slapping her head as she would shake it in the morning as we are getting out of bed, now the silence is just enough to be to much. She was on meds in the morning and evening and she would bug the hell out of me to get it done, now I have that void as well as it had become a ritualfpr the two of us.

My three boys are wanting to have a small stone engraved to mark her spot and I think it would be great as it would be their way of still visiting with her at my parents. My dad has some prized and rare yellow lillies that he has transplanted to her burial site, he felt that would also be a way for her to still be a part of our lives. You guys are the best and I appreciate you letting me share this with you, I think of all of you as my extended family.

    Thanks so very much,
    Mike

No problem, Mike, I'll take care of it. Alley Animals is a really good group of people. They patrol the back alleys of Baltimore in an old van and look for dogs and cats that are roaming the streets (I wouldn't go into some of those alleys with nothing less than a squad of Marines!). They try and rescue what they can and provide medical help if needed. Some of the stories they relate can make you shudder, there are some truly cruel people in the world. I'll gladly honor Lacey's memory, for you.
    Take care, Ken

My heartfelt condolences. It's so hard to have a furry friend that shows nothing but unconditional love and brings so much joy into your life, leave so suddenly.

My two black labs, Jasper and Ruger, are my sons. I'll have to bury Jasper in a few short years (he's 10), and I just don't know how I'm going to face each day without him.

Going afield will never be the same, but his indomitable spirit and graceful gait will always live on in my memories.

    Mike:

    I feel your pain!

My brother called me early this evening and said they have to put their dog Shelby down tomorrow morning. He took her to the vet today and she was diagnosed with cancer. She's barely able to stand and can't hold any bowel movements at all. She cries in pain all the time.

The vet gave her a shot to kind of alleviate some of the pain so my brother could bring her home for the night and the family can say their goodbyes. Shelby has been a part of the family for almost 15 years. I actually have a few tears flowing right now just thinking about it.

The toughest job will be up to my brother when he takes her to the vet in the morning.

Mike, again I feel your pain. I'm right there with ya!

    No excuses!

Thanks again guys, your support has meant more to me than you will ever know. We found out today that a local breeder found out about our girls passing, I'm not sure how they found out but they called this afternoon while I was away and told the wife that they had choc. labs that are 8 weeks old and ready to go with papers and all and that we could have pick of the litter at no charge.

I think our vet may have had something to do with it as we got a card in the mail from the entire staff today. Anyway the wife is going down in the morning to pick one out and I guess our golden retriever will have a new playmate, I hope it will help her as she has been just lost without lacey.

John, send my condolences to your brother and tell him I will be thinking about him in the morning.

    Thanks to all again,
    Mike
