I have no experience with any of these units, but if all your friend really wants is for it to be loud, then choose the unit with the most watts per channel.
Here is the disclaimer though:
"just because a unit has more watts per channel than another, does not mean it will sound better, might even sound worst, or you could destroy your speakers by pushing them too hard with bad amplification."
Hopefully this helps just a little in terms of getting your friends HT system to play loud. For me the quality of the sound is the most important part, then you can add more amplification to create a more dynamic volume range without distortion or corruption in the quality.
Denon, Sony, and Marantz AVRs I do have experience with, and they all sounded good at more then loud enough volumes to make your ears bleed.

Willow, are you limited to Futureshop?SDA-2a, Anthem Pre-2L, Anthem Amp 1, MF A324 DAC, Rotel RCD1070
Senn HD650 Cardas, Mapletree Audio Ear+ HD2, Kimber KS1030, Bel Canto DAC2, M-Audio Transit, Laptop. -
Turn him on to one of these:
The Ultimate Receiver
If he likes it LOUD and clean, he should shoot for this. I have one, in a 4500 sq ft house. It ROCKS!!!! -
No he is not limited to FS, I do know he wants to keep the price under 900$ and he seems to favor yammy or HK.
This is a quote from him "I don't need to hear the crisp soud of violins or guitars, but my movies need to be loud and sound good" -
Lol, at least he knows what he wants.
I have a Denon 2802, rated at 90watts/channel. It goes plenty loud and sounds great. The only problem is it cost me a little more than $900CDN. The Denon 1804 is in his price range and rated at 90watts/channel as well.
I opted for the Denon over a Yamaha RXV-1400, to me the Denon seemed less edgy.
You're in Ottawa aren't you? There must be a few smaller audio boutiques there. You guys should take a trip around town and hit a few different stores to have a listen at some options.SDA-2a, Anthem Pre-2L, Anthem Amp 1, MF A324 DAC, Rotel RCD1070

HT sounds like the real preference, so either choice would suffice, and perform well for that application. I like HK, out of the two mentioned, but he should get the most AVR for his money regardless of brand name.CTC BBQ Amplifier, Sonic Frontiers Line3 Pre-Amplifier and Wadia 581 SACD player. Speakers? Always changing but for now, Mission Argonauts I picked up for $50 bucks, mint.

He sure does....
I have tried to inform him on others but he will not move it's either yammy or HK just not sure which of the choices above would be best for him.
FOR me do you still have that link for canadian dealer of HSU or was it SVS. Please and thank you -

it seems $ for $ the yammy seems to offer more -
The Yammy will give him more features. The HK may edge it in SQ.
You guys need to do some shopping, is all. Go check out both. -
