Hi,

I finally saved enough money to buy a pre-amp and an amp for my LSi speakers. I was wondering if the Harman Kardon DPR1001 digital AVR is a good candidate for a somewhat middle-end pre-amp. I am planning on mating it with the Outlaw Model 770.

Here is what I was planning:

pre-amp: HK DPR1001 (7.1 capable receiver)
amp: Outlaw Model 770 (7x200watts)

speakers:
LSi15 - front
LSiC - center
LSiFx - rear surround
LSi7 - side surround

Anyone has the same set-up? Anyways, Circuit City has the HK on sale for $431.99 and I'd like to jump on it since it looks like a good price. Besides, I have a $45 g/c from CC that I still have yet to use....

Thanks! Any input will be very much appreciated.

Sincerely,
kibro

    kibro2,

$431.99 is a good price for that unit ( 386.99 w/ gift card you have).

It has pre-outs for all 7 channels, component vid, etc....so you have all the connections needed, but I am unfamiliar with the Outlaw amp so I don't know if it would be a good match sonically. I'm sure someone in here will have an idea if they would sound good together..

    Have fun...Mike

I bought this receiver about 10 days ago. Just wanted to let you know that I’ve used it with my Rti8’s, and with them it is a very “bright” sounding receiver. Very crisp. Which is what I like, but some others prefer a more mellow sound. So, just wanted to give you a heads up on that.

I’m a little ticked off as I paid $569 for it about 10 days ago at CC (and thought I got a great deal), and now CC is selling it for $431?? I’m halfway tempted to buy it off the website at $431, and take my $569 receiver back!

    iluvmusic,

with that price difference, im sure it is well worth it to return what you have and order one online. they ship for free by the way. with more than $100 bucks difference, that will pay for gas and a 10-20 minute wait time on the customer service line. unless you are being paid over $200 bucks an hour, i'd say it is a worthwhile effort ;)

anyways, i will try it out. worse case scenario is i will return it back. CC is such a wonderful store as far as their return policy is concerned.

    thanks for the heads up.

    Update:

BTW, Their 5 hour sale is over. The price is now back to $569.99.

Yeah, I was going to do it, but I missed it - I didn't realize it was over at 4 pm eastern time, and I live in the central time zone. But, I'll keep my eye out over the next two weeks.

I was half way thinking of even buying the HK AVR630 today, and comparing them and taking back the one I liked least.

Let us know how that turns out, using the DPR as a pre-amp, as I'm interested in doing the same thing.

One thing I really like about the DPR is the Vmax mode. I haven't got my surrounds setup yet, and VMAX mode really is nice when watching a dvd with just 2 speakers.

You'll probably like it, but it might need more juice - an amp will probably work well with it.

Oh, by the way remember after you get it all connected, that there's a master power switch under the front panel on the right-middle of the receiver. I don't believe it says anything about it in the manual. When I first hooked mine up, I connected the power and thought the unit was dead and defective. Then I looked at HK's site on the internet and one of the FAQ's said to turn on the master power switch - you'd think it would say something in the manual about it!!!!!! I looked all over the back of the unit for some sort of master power switch - didn't realize it was hidden under the front door.
