Just got a 99% Clean set of Polk 7Cs for $100

I couldn't pass these up, didn't really need them, but I had just missed an opportunity to buy a pair of 10s locally. I had 10Bs brand new back in the day.

So, for $100, with the same frequency response as the 10s, I figured what the heck.

Did about an hour of listening hooked up to my Parasound A21, thru my Node 2i and RME ADI-2. Fairly impressed! Now by no means does it knock the paint down or rearrange the wall art like my A23+ into my modded 2.3s, but classic Polk fullness sound, and no slouch on the bass at moderate to mid-high volume, specially with quality material.

Now, what I did take away was this: I now have a lookback comparison to when my 2.3s had the SL2000s, and I am glad I did the 194 upgrade there. For me, and I know not for all, I can hear the sharp difference in the SL2000s, and will likely get some 194s for these 7Cs.

I just got a copy of the Audio Advisor monthly rag in the mail, and saw the PSB Passif 50 on the cover. I went online to check the specs, seeing they are 2" taller" 2' inches narrower, and similar depth, I compared them to the 7Cs. Hard to believe the PSB's freq response is only 50-20,000Hz, for the low low price of $2498 a pair! (7C 25Hz-26kHz)

That all said, if I upgrade the tweeters to 194s and recap/resistor these 7Cs, what else would I buy to compare these to? Hard to believe the PSBs would be leaps above these, but maybe someone has some, and can comment.

Why not add the RD-0198's while you're upgrading?

Good Idea on the 198s! For the 7's, might be worth a shot at the 198's, that way I can hear them in something. Are there component values that change to support those vs 194? I suppose it would be the same as the full freq tweeter in a 1.2TL mod?

I already installed 194s in my 2.3s and like them a lot more than the SL2000s, and have all the components to upgrade those XOs which I will be doing that in a couple weeks.

Do a search on TL mod for monitor 7.

Are those Polk stands? If so that is confirmation of that particular style which I saw in some of their advertisements.

Yeah, hadn't started a search yet, so will do.

I think they are Polk stands. Anyoneelse sure? I used to own 10s on stands, but that is before digital pics, though I have a 3x5 glossy print somewhere :)

Nice find! But, Polk used to spec their speakers without the more accurate -3dB ratings. The Monitor 7 are probably close to the PSB Passif 50 in bass response. The Passif 50 is a far better speaker than the original Passif II model. The Passif IIs would cost about the same with inflation as the Passif 50s now and the Passif IIs were considered a genuine bargain like the Polks were.

I'm not sure but I think a pair of original Passif IIs, if they could be found even in half way decent shape, would be around $200. I'm also guessing that a new Monitor 7 would probably be around $2.5K a pair. As long as there are original Monitor 7s around and Polk sells replacement tweeters it likely makes it difficult to justify bringing a new version to market. Polk built them good!
