What's the correct way to use SLM ?

If you were wondering, SLM is a Sound Level Meter. I'm using one from Radio Shock, I know how I need to set it but was wondering should I point it towards the ceiling at all time or should I point it to the corresponding speaker when it emits test tone.

Great idea for setup with the meter ntculenuff. It would seem to be the most accurate way to do the setup. I think I do mine over the way you suggested.Chris

I point my SLM up toward the ceiling. I place it on a tri-pod like others in the sweet spot and set up each speaker one at a time using the test tone from a set up DVD. It makes a big difference once all your speakers are set up with the correct level coming out of them. I was a little skeptical at first.. but once i did it and then listened to a CD and DVD i was hooked. SLM are pretty cheap or borrow one from a friend. It does make a difference to find out how off your speaker settings were.PolkFest 2012, who's going>?

I have it in center of room, or center sweetspot at ear level and it slightly upwards and toward each speaker being tested. I read this some where and it worked great for me. Calibrated at THX sound levels(if your speakers can acheive it that is) I think it was 80db speakers and 120db sub.
