I've read that enhanced speaker performance is gained by tilting the base up by about 6 degrees. Is this recommended for the SDA 1A's?

It depends on the speaker and the listening location height (height of the listener's ears). Some speakers can benefit from tilting them forward and some, even backwards.
Easy enought to try it yourself with a couple of CD jewel cases or some books. It's a quick test to see if it would work in your particular situation.
Tom~ In search of accurate reproduction of music. Real sound is my reference and while perfection may not be attainable? If I chase it, I might just catch excellence. ~ -

If they still have the SL1000's or 2000's, tilt them as far back until you cannot hear them any more.Don't take experimental gene therapies from known eugenicists.

I will say there is really no harm or cost to try tilting it back.... Not like they will explode

Could also just sit on a couple cushions and lean forward.
