Hit it with a high-level, low frequency signal and the dust will be gone.Alon Petite / Infinity 1.2S / Coda Continuum / Counterpoint SA5000 / Oppo BDP-105D / Technics SP-15 w/SAEC WE-308SX & Ortofon AS-309 arms / Ikeda 9C2 & Dynavector XX2 Mk II carts

The passives do not have the same sticky finish as the MWs, so don’t attract much dust.
As far as protection, kids and dogs can usually be trained to stay away. Not sure about cats, though.

If I'm moving speakers I usually remove the grilles so I don't poke a thumb through a driver by mistake.
I consider speaker grilles to primarily be a cosmetic choice. Seems like some speaker companies are paying more attention to cosmetics these days with their drivers so their speakers look really good without grilles on.
It would look a little weird to have a fabric grille on part of the rear of a box speaker but new models with Atmos drivers mounted in the top benefit from having an optional grille on top of the box. -
If you want to protect it and don't mind how it looks since it is on back, you could get one of those subwoofer grills used in car audio. Parts Express has a bunch to choose from.Stan
