Marantz UD7007 problem

I've had this for a few years now. It has always just been a cd player in my 2 channel rig, always been happy to just use the direct mode playing tunes. Recently connected it to a monitor...the Marantz splash screen comes up and then the screen goes blank. No matter what button I press on the remote there is nothing. Other than waiting this long to try and use the menu on a monitor, am I doing something wrong?

The direct mode shuts down the video circuitry and pure direct shuts down video and panel display. I'm not sure if that feature is controlled from the remote or front panel or both.
