Ifi power x

These are low low noise power supplies.
Supposed to be 10x quieter than lps . Orded 2 - 12 volt ones for router/ modem and one for TV box (Xfinity). Good reviews $109 each

Got my iPower for $45 and they were $50 at the time. I'm interested in what improvements they have made. Contemplating one 5V for my Squeezebox Touch and one 12V (3amp?) for my router, not knowing until I try if there will be any noticeable difference. I guess that's the way it goes with this stuff.

These are still SMPS type power supplies. Better designed than the typical switching supply. I am curious to see how well they work.

A really good linear supply from TeraDak is only $99 and I assume that would give even greater improvements.

I've looked at the iFi wall warts several times, but since they were still switching supplies that cost more than a good linear supply, I passed on them.

Let us know your results. I'm sure they will make a difference, but I would always be wondering if a true LPS would do even better.

I could be wrong but last I recall reading about ifi is that their power supplies have a form of active filtering to combat the noise of the smps design.

There are many ways to skin a cat but I would take more noise from a linear power supply versus less noise from filtering out the noise from a smps that translates to less noise

I considered these as a lower cost alternative to a LPS. I forget what made me change my mind but either a measurement, graph or multiple reviews....it's been a while since I read up on all of this stuff. All I remember is that there was something I ran across that steered me away from them.

I did end up going with a iFi iPower Elite 12v PS because I ran across this thread that was enlightening to me. https://audiophilestyle.com/forums/topic/31119-power-supply-8-group-test-lps-and-smps/

^^^ This is the noise the unit tested offers (which is very low, compared to others). ^^^

In the conclusion comments for the test, the gentleman stated,

iFi iPower 9V HiFi SMPS 100% win over HIFI LPS, from the power measured, and the ripple test, with eye dropping new technology, traditional idea on SMPS to be reversed.

SMPS vs LPS is no longer the issue, now really depends on the actual product.

Well, after reading this and also putting into consideration, no additional cost for DC cables, additional upgraded PC's and then the LPS? I could just get an iFi iPower Elite 12v PS (I needed/preferred the additional amperage) at a cool cost of $300 and be done with it.

I figured that if they didn't work or added additional noise, I'd simply return them. I bought two of them and one of them is currently on my mother unit of the mesh network and the other one powers the EtherREGEN.

I am usually NOT a measurements guy at all but when it comes to power? I can "see" the noise and what I do not want to see is just that. The less, the better. I have no complaints and would recommend them.

Later on down the road, I might experiment a little bit with differing higher end PS's but right now? I feel absolutely ZERO need to explore this any further. The system sounds great and is quiet enough to enjoy just about every macro and micro detail offered in a recording.

With that said, if you want to debate me about a LPS being superior to a switching PS? I simply will not debate. Personally, I do not care. All I ever care about is the end result as to what hits these ears. To me, that's all that matters.

I'm sure I'm not the only one interested in your findings. iFi does make some great products. Rick (a buddy of mine in our local audio group) runs his phono rig with the iPhono and it sounds great! He has one of the better LP rigs I have heard in my travels...

I'm running two ifi 5v iPOWER ELITE SMPS. One for the DAC - ifi NEO iDSD & one for the LHY Audio modded Node 2i w/ their 5v PSU. Phenomenal results all the way around. I see no need for me to further explore other PSU, either LPS or SMPS.

Uptone ISO Regen with its switching mode power supply beat a linear lab supply with USB Hub in this test. Position of galvanic isolation switch made no difference previously (not shown here):
