German Shepherds

Anyone have or had one that knows some knowledge about them. Or owner groups I could join for tips and tricks?
My brother just passed and besides going to Racine to clear out his apartment and settling his affairs. I made the choice of adopting his five year old German Shepherd. Her name is Savior, but we are thinking it’s too weird of a name so maybe changing it to Xavier. We currently have two standard poodles that are 55 pounds and Xavier is about 85 pounds. No fights yet , but lots of growling and snapping by my one poodle. As always any and all help would be greatly appreciated.
Love yours. Dfzq4mwyr5u3g.jpeg

My Dad had a German Shepherd years ago and I had a poodle named Bear, who would chase that Shepard all over. Both great dogs. Poodle was smarter than heck and a great hunter. Shepard was afraid of how quick Bear could snap but they never fought. Shepards can be very nice but some can be feisty

I'm very sorry to hear of your loss. My condolences.

Dogs are very territorial as you most likely know. I would recommend taking a very slow approach. Maybe have a room at first where Xavier stays in and sleeps in a crate at night and you bring out to play with the others, heavily supervised for ten minutes at a time a few times a day.

After a few weeks of that, you can maybe increase the space he stays in to two rooms and more supervised play.

I've found for most situations after a month or so they should be acclimated.

It is very important that all the dogs know you are the alpha and the omega of the pack and in doing so they will fall in line

Wouldn’t change the dog’s name. She’s a female; why give her a male name that sounds similar to the one she already has? That’s more weird.

Sam Kinison had a great routine about taking a dog to a dog psychologist. Something like, woman takes her dog to the dog psychologist, says “Sparky won’t bark.” Psychologist tells the lady that he needs to take Sparky in the back for examination. Once in the back room, the shrink yells at the dog, “You’re a dog, d@mmit, BARK!” Takes the dog back and says to the lady, “Sparky’s OK now, that’ll be five hundred bucks.”

Beautiful dog! She lost her best friend. I'm sorry for your loss and her's. I've had a few German Shepherds over the years. Awesome dogs. Each one ended up with hip problems later in life (hip dysplasia). Find out if she's been spayed, if you don't want poodle-shepherds. If she's an outdoor dog, she'll shed like crazy and have to be brushed often. She'll shed, not to be confused with She Shed Cheryl form the TV commercials.

She'll be nervous for a while before she settles in to life with the new pack. There will be an adjustment period but all dogs figure out where they fit in eventually. The largest dog isn't always the "boss" among the dogs in a pack of domestic dogs. German Shepherds and Standard Poodles are both some of the most intelligent dog breeds and they learn how to adapt well. They just need leadership and direction from the human head of the pack. Dogs also get jealous of the attention and treats others get so remember this is an adjustment for the poodles too.

Maybe feed them separately for a while until they all get used to each other. The growls and snaps are just the way dogs communicate ownership, territory, and pecking order with each other.

Beautiful dog....have owned shepherds for the past 30 years or so...used to love taking them to the dog park near the airport (MSP) think it was right off 62.....or down by the river to run....get your learn on Shepherds owners board on Facebook pretty good...but like the internet all are experts lol you need to keep them busy or they become bored quickly and look for ways to get their energy out....thus chewing everything within eyesight...TONS of info out their....bottom line they are fantastic companions...feed her by hand for a few weeks all meals.....and the bonding process will take faster....she will realize she needs you to survive....once bonded you are golden....small prey drives might be a small problem as Mn is full of tree rats.....believe me the time you put in will have great end results..I found info on dogs bowing to one another pretty interesting....and learning your dogs body language will help you understand the dog....is she crated at all? Have fun and enjoy your new fur buddy

Sorry to hear about your loss.

We have an almost 2 year old GSD that we got as a puppy. They are a great breed and I love how quickly they learn. Now they do tend to get highly attached to people and one thing is they are like Velcro. Ours follows us everywhere. Bathroom, kitchen, etc. just always wants to be by their human.

Our guy is very social. Loves to play and chase and be chased. We do lots of training and nose work to get his energy out. We do still have issues with him chasing our cats but never hurts them. Just wants to play and doesn’t understand they are lazy and don’t like his play style.

Take it slow and just watch out for commons GSD issues like hip, eye and bloat. bloat can cause be a huge issue if the stomach is flipped so we always exercise caution when playing and eating. Giving rest before and after meals to help reduce chances of it happening. Also we found our guy as the most sensitive stomach out there and heard a lot of them have this issue.

Sheps are usually very protective and have a strong tendency to bond. She may need some time to adjust and is probably confused that her master isn't there. Give her lots of love and time. Don't neglect the other dogs. Treat them all equally. They should accept her into the pack soon enough. Condolences for your loss.

My wifes brother was married to one of the trainers at this verins daughter. He also bred **** hunds.

We use to go on the weekends and watch thier dogs compete. All his sheppards were trophy winners. They would attack only on command but were the friendliest dogs with kids and would never be aggressive unless commanded to. They are a very loyal and protective breed. Take good care of her hopefully you got a big fenced in yard and like to go on walks.

Dogs growl at one another. At some point they may actually get into it with one another establishing hierarchy. Just make sure they all know that you and your wife are the top dogs. She will naturally accept you as the master based on your genetic smell. We used to train ours for tracking and schutzhund. Great fun for the whole family.

Humans speak languages in which words have meaning. Science provides further insight into how people understand the world around them. This includes how to “identify” the difference between male and female.

Therefore, it is logical that humans recognize these kinds of distinctions.

You are the one whom suggested the dog may identify herself as non-binary. That is illogical.

My daughter was home from college for the weekend to support me. She was playing tug o war with Savior. My one poodle came down the stairs and I don’t know if the poodle growled or snapped at Savior but the fight was on. Very quickly the 80 pound shepard had the 55 pound poodle pinned and was grabbing poodles neck. Afterwards no blood. That was two days ago. I put all the toys away and being careful when the three are together. Peace. D
