A buddy of mine has some Def Tech speakers and the plate amps are not repairable and out of warranty. Def Tech is apparently offering him a substantial discount on a pair of 9080X, any thoughts on those speakers ?

I see on the DT website that they have a 50% off sale going on them now. $999 each. Is the discount they are offering less than that?

Slightly better than half but if they’re offering 50 percent off on website he isn’t getting Jack. So much for customer service huh?

There's a guy who repairs these, I'll find the link

The new stuff is not as good as the old stuff

  • Imo only I own the BP7002 , CLR 2500
I have heard the newer ones and for what they are , they sound good but I feel mine are better and built better. My buddy has two plate amps fail under warranty on the 9080 FWIW. II still have the originals from 2007 , knock on wood no failures yet. But I am not 100 sure about their quality control nowadays. My Def tech Trinity sub still works great too. From 2010.

Saw this and gonna contact him.
Have had zero luck finding someone that will repair my B.A.S.H amp in my Infinity Prelude MTS subwoofers.

Would be great if he can then I don’t have to use my subs for FIRE WOOD!

He said Def Tech repaired his plate amps but they were still F’d up when he got them back. He has an email into them to see if the discount they offered was from the sale price or what? We’ll see what they say. I think he’s had lots of probs with their plate amps.

Honestly doing anything with the new stuff is just bad money chasing bad money.

Sell them for parts or just sell as is and switch it up completely

He will be making a new post about the 9080 in no time

I had the CS-8080HD that I purchased locally for really cheap and flipped. Compared to my CLR-3000? It was smaller, lighter, and did feel like it had cheaper build quality overall. But the sound quality was VERY close, so close in fact that I considered selling the 3000 instead, but better thoughts prevailed...

not sure if that helps your friend, just my experience...

The clr3000 is a beast... Changing the junk crossover parts would unveil a whole other speaker underneath.

The fact a twenty year old speaker with old electrolytic caps sounded "the same" as the new stuff unfortunately isn't a solid endorsement for the new stuff 😉

If I had any idea how to do that I just might, but alas I do not :-(
