SDA 1c: What exactly happens when interconnect cable is disconnected?

1) the two noise-canceling drivers do nothing/become passive radiators?
2) the two noise-canceling drivers still cancel noise, but not as effectively?
3) the two noise-canceling drivers play the stereo signal?
4) something else???

I'll go with 1, Alex. Final answer.

The SDA drivers are 'cross-talk cancelling" not noise cancelling. When you disconnect them, they stop playing and SDA becomes non-functioning. Those drivers will still move to the sound waves generated by the other two drivers and the passive but will have little effect on the sound.

They still play at I believe at 125hz and below because of the sub bass drive circuit. They do NOT just become passive radiators or sympathetic to the other drivers. Earlier first and second generation SDA that used the blade/blade interconnect would behave that way. Once the B/b interconnect was removed they would receive zero signal.

Don't disconnect the SDA cable. Problem solved. :)
  • Thanks gang. Got it. So they don’t really just become conventional speakers without the cable, then, huh? I assume the presence of the drivers, whether they are passive or not, colors the sound in an unintended way- it would have to right, since these weren’t designed to be used without the cable. It would be interesting to remove the two outer drivers and seal up the holes just to see what that would sound like.

In the meantime I might install a simple rocker switch along the cable (mine is just speaker wire soldered to some RCA plugs) to just open or close the circuit, so I can turn it off more easily without having to unplug the cable and then rush back to my listening spot (for doing an a/b comparison).

I’m having a blast with these. I have Forte 3’s but picked up the Polks super cheap because I was so curious, but after upgrading the tweeters with the Rd014 and fixing the seized woofers, I’m kind of falling in love with them! The midrange clarity in the middle of the soundstage rivals the Forte, but the left or right channel clarity is inferior. But the Forte bass feels bloated on some signs, and the Polks it sounds more natural. Also, that sound stage!!! Anyway, I’m rambling - just eager to gush about my crush on these to a sympathetic audience.
