For Sale: Joule Electra LA-100

A system downsizing requires that I sell this classic Joule Electra LA-100, serial number 041. This is an original version, not Mark xx. I am the second owner, purchased in 2013. A trusted tech replaced the caps in the power supply side and cleaned the pots and switches in 2019. New power supply tubes were also installed then. In June 2020, a pair of RCA black plate 5751s were installed. 27it2w4br2x0.jpeg

    Nice!

I like the silver knobs a lot better than the gold ones Jud started using after your model. When I had my MkII I swapped out the gold knobs for silver.

PM sent. I sold my MG 3.6 Rs last fall. Then last week I sold the Odyssey Khartago amps. Do I miss them? Yeah, sometimes. But something tells me that selling this piece will be something I will really regret, because when I got it, it made such a huge impact.

@kevhed72 Respectfully, this is a special pre at a great price, I'm pretty sure you would love it. Tube rolling or not.

Also I believe 5751 can be rolled with 12AX7.

I have spares of all tubes. Three 5751s: two are GE JAN which I bought prior to the RCAs; one is a Sylvania that was in it when bought in 2013, but tested good. Also a spare set of the others, which I can dig out and identify if interested. I just have the 5751s memorized.

Look at the bright side, 6EM7 and OA2 are dirt cheap tubes. The 5751 is a 12ax7 with less gain, they're the only pricey tubes in it.

Can 12au7 / ax7 be safely rolled in the place of the 5751, aside from the gain differences? I have a decent collection of au7s I will be tempted to roll in at some point….

I will defer to others here. I have only used 5751s in mine, but I believe any 12ax7 variant will work.
Edit: Personally, I’d stick with the 5751 or lower gain variants, because with my Odyssey amps I was never able to used more than the lower half of the volume control.

I would not use a 12AU7 in place of a 5751 or 12AX7. Those circuits are designed a certain way and while some swapping of similar variants are ok. 12AX7 and 12AU7 are different enough that it won't sound right.

I recently accidentally did just that in my pre. It uses (2) 12AX7' s and (4) 12AU7's. I wasn't thinking and put in an extra pair of 12AX7's in one of the 12AU7 spots. Played some music and thought WTF, then realized what I had done.

Short term there may no be damage to the tube or the circuit since they are wired the same, but long term who knows.........

P.s. If you do decide to do that against recommendations, it's not going to blow up. But again long term use, who knows.

I would stick with the 5751. Jud knew what he was doing.

I use a pair of 5751's in place of12AX7's in my pre. I can say late 50's Tung Sol 5751 gray plates are excellent tubes. Liquid, controlled, focused and great bass extension. Highly recommended.

This arrived last week in perfect shape-thanks Mike for a flawless transaction. It took me awhile to settle in with the Joule and wrap my mind around what I was hearing. This pre is up there with the Belles 350A amp and Benchmark DAC2 are as game changer components I have owned. More to come but very happy I pulled the trigger on this pre.

I’m glad that it stayed here. The principal reason that I joined this forum was that there are (and, sadly, were) several people here with experience with Joule Electra. I hope that it gives you years of service.
