1st Post & Recent 5JR+ Purchase

Sharing a first post using the acquisition of a pair of 5JR+ speakers as the excuse.

I recently "re-commissioned" my late-80s gear (harmon/kardon receiver & Kyocera CD) and needed a pair of speakers.

I wanted to be period correct and fondly remembered my brother owning a pair of Polk speakers in the 90s. I quickly found a nice pair locally on OfferUp and paired them with generic speaker stands from Craigslist.

With research on the forum I bought and installed SL-2500 tweeters. I may update the crossovers at some point using member recommendations.

Some pics included.

Regards,

JR

Nice and welcome! Those tweeters must be the RD0198, which is the upgrade/replacement for the SL2500. See picture below and attachment for Series II Brochure:

You're welcome. Those stands are very well suited for them! Which stands are they? Are they able to be filled with sand?

How do you like the sound you are getting?

    Looks great.
Those Kyocera components were very good and also quite beautiful. None too common, then or now.
The Polks fit in very well.

That hk receiver looks... familiar. ;)

(I think this one's the same model -- yours may be newer than this one, though)

My 5jr+ had SL2000 so they could be RD0194 tweeters as well

Kyocera cassette decks were very nice, they used ceramic materials throughout the design to minimize audible vibrations from being picked up by the heads. I think they were a ceramics manufacturer.

    That’s a good-looking set-up. Congrats!

If space permits, I would recommend pulling the stands forward so the speakers are a little bit in front of the table to mitigate undesirable reflections. This should improve the soundstaging and imagining considerably.

A little bit of toe-in toward the listening seat also recommended for improved center-fill.

Kyocera = Kyoto Ceramics. I think they still are, in fact (a ceramics manufacturer).

Thanks all for the kind comments.

@Gardenstater - Stands are generic (no name on them). I don’t believe they could be filled with sand in their current configuration.

@mhardy6647 - Yes, very familiar. I notice yours has more presets. “4” = 40w vs. my “3” with 30 watts? Mine is circa 1988.

@jbreezy5 - I had them positioned as you recommended. Current alignment/positioning helps ensure household harmony.

@Clipdat - Thanks for noticing. It’s a ‘94 R2 and was my brother’s from ‘98 until his passing in ’18. Trying to be a good caretaker of it.

Start slowly inching them out a quarter inch at a time over the course of several weeks/months until they are back into their original positions.
