Satellite Internet Service

With the ever incressing costs to have a land-line and DSL service through Windstream we are thinking about dropping them to use just cell phones & sat internet. It appears that Star Link is the best option for both speed/latency and cost in the long run....if you can get the equipment. We will probably follow by dropping DirecTV and stream whatever we watch(as long as I have DVR).

Our neighbor has Star Link and seems to be happy with it. Other than the wait time to get the equipment, anybody know of drawbacks?

The only negative I've heard is that as more people sign up for the service the speeds may drop. That could be resolved and Elon Musk companies have a habit of fixing and adapting things as they go. Seems to be ok presently for one or two devices streaming content at the same time.

I'm not sure if the Starlink service is affected by "rain fade" like DirecTV is.

Check for team mobile 5g internet. Flat $50 a month.

A client is getting 260/60. It isn't even in a window. It's in the center of his house. He's streaming DirecTV from 8 TVs in the house, often 6 at once, plus webmail and browsing without issues.

Another (who's rural) is getting 120/32 and looking for someone to install his StarLink on the roof.

BIL just put the StarLink on a stump in his front yard where it works great. He lives in CA desert, so trees and neighbors aren't an issue - much less a HOA. LOL

Right now it's about the only reasonable option in my
area. Fiber deployment has stalled. Comcast and DSL
options weren't going to cut it. Verizon is updating cell
    towers all over the place.

I would love to see how it performs in my area, but I just locked Optimum F/O in @ $70/month until Dec 2023 so staying put for now.
I considered going with AT&T since they've been our cell provider for many years but their claim of 5G service isn't even close to being true; in fact I don't see anything but LTE throughout Suffolk County in spite of being in the "5G blue zone"...
So, are you willing to put forth a little effort or are you happy sitting in your skeptical poo pile?

We are rural and team mobile 5g internet is not available here nor most any other service other than DSL and sat. We do have trees that may come into play, hafta look into this further i guess. The only con I see with StarLink is apparently upload speeds are meh. No problem for us though since we rarely do that.

For those about to install satellite internet (or TV,) recently talked with a veteran roofer who says *Do Not* mount anything on the roof through shingles or tiles. He says the material used to plug/seal the holes and around the mount doesn't last as long as the roof, so leaks are *likely.*
Firmly strap a mounting pole to the side of the chimney (if the chimney is fully strong - wind can exert a lot of force on the dish and mount) or find another location on the property.
Starlink says "for people in the northern hemisphere, Starlink dishes point north. The angle of the dish is nearly vertical, but it has a very wide angled field of view. That is why Starlink needs a clear view of the sky all around it, even if the satellites are in more of a northern direction." Other sites say it needs 100 degrees of unobstructed view. So it can't be too close to the chimney lower than the top of the chimney.
However, if it has a clear view of the satellite constellation to the north, it might object but not really matter. I expect it would only be an issue if the system someday needed to switch to another satellite constellation that wasn't so far north.

The other classic way to mount stuff is an eave mount -- or stand-off mounts on a wall.

    source: https://www.radioshackcatalogs.com/flipbook/1977_radioshack_catalog.html

Chimney mount is fine if the chimney's up to the load.
I am sure these things are small but surprises aren't much fun. :#

This kind of stuff is still available.

What does the Starlink stuff require in terms of lightning protection?

I guess another alternative for me is to mount the dish on our barn which will have no obstructions, then send that signal to the house which is 200' away using Ubiquiti M2 wireless access points?

Currently being a slave to mediacoms 1 gig internet no complaints as far as speed and reliability the price is starting to make me consider looking into others my area is supported by the T moibile deal however I have my doubts.

I see they have a 15 day trial which I could back out of and I'm considering trying it out, to see if my doubts of speed and reliability issues can be proven wrong.

I overlapped team mobile with my Comcast for a month.
15 day trials weren't available back then. Once in a while I
See a glitch for a few seconds. Not sure if it's the 5g or the
Inside wireless. Wireless survey tools show a whole lot of
Connections out there and the order of signal strength
bounces around a lot. I think a lot of Comcast users don't
Know their box sets up Comcast public roaming networks.
They sell that as a feature for users on the go, but don't tell
You they are piggybacking that service off their customer's
boxes. And eating up part of their download speeds.

tx, I may very well take you up on that offer to discuss further. Once I receive the equipment my 1st choice is to mount on a 10' mast attached to the top of our chimney. From there it still will not clear the pine trees to the NE, but those trees are a good 150' away so I'm hoping it will work. There are large maple trees that may come ito play too but they are more to the south of the chimney. I don;t understand why the whole sky is scanned by Starlink's app when the dish will always be pointed to the NE. Using the barn. which will have zero obstructions, is my other solution if chimney mount doesn't work.

We def need to do something not only from the cost aspect but our DSL speed is a whopping 3 mbps(on a good day) with an upload of .62...I'm surprised we can stream anything w/o buffering. We picked up a nice OLED TV for Christmas and streamed material is less than ideal.

So, I just ran across an internet service that claims to provide 25 mbps even though we do not have line of sight to one of their towers. It's half the cost/mo. vs. Starlink and only $100 upfront vs. Starlink's $600. They have 50 mbps available but only if you have line of sight.

We do not do any gaming, will 25 mbps be good enough to get a good streaming picture? I know it's certainly fast enough for what we do on a computer.

If consistent, 25 Mbps is enough for even a 4K video stream if there is very little other traffic on it at the same time. (There's little 4K content available now though.)
Enough for even 3-5 1080p video streams. Some services compress the streams so less than 5 Mbps per 1080p stream is needed.
Until you have more bandwidth, some services/devices can be configured to 720p to prevent buffering delays and pixelation. That's what we did with Netflix and Roku on my GF's DSL when she had 2.5/0.5.

A co-worker suggested trying T-Mobile internet. Picked up their "gateway" box, installed in just a few minutes...and we are set. $37 to activate. Usually 20+ mbps at $50/mo. and they say they will never raise the rates, not sure how they can make that promise,

Ah, seems as if they are. These states (listed below), starting in August of last year already voted to allow AT&T to start abandoning their landline/landline services.

    Alabama
    Arkansas
    Florida
    Georgia
    Illinois
    Indiana
    Kansas
    Kentucky
    Louisiana
    Michigan
    Mississippi
    Missouri
    Nevada
    North Carolina
    Ohio

It is estimated that by 2050, all landline services will be extinct.

To be clear, the AT&T landline here in Illinois had a little box that basically made it a cell phone. It has a sim card and used towers.
They abandoned it years ago. Nothing road on the wire line coming into your house.

The client I set up with the T-mob Home Internet (5G), I next installed DirecTV STREAM boxes on all his (7) TVs. Samsung Smart TVs, and some others (not all,) have the DirecTV app but he wanted the same model remote on all and had a variety of brands and generation of TVs. We then canceled his AT&T DSL and AT&T DirecTV. He's been very happy with it. Buying the STREAM boxes, he saves enough in leasing fees to pay for the boxes in 2-3 years. He chose refubished STREAM boxes for both guest rooms to save even more.

I had thought about their stream service, but we would be still paying $80+/mo. to watch only about 5 different channels. Probably going with OTA antenna for locals and look to find a cheaper stream service for the channels we want.

That's a good price @ $7/mo. and decent DVR option. DVR & able to ff thru commercials is a must with whatever we decide to go with. Actually I need to sit down and write out the channels we want to have and then the search is on. After a brief look I'm bummed I won't get the YES channel for Yankee games(often would tune in late in the game before bed time) but I'm sure I can live w/o it. Overall goal is to save some $$ to put towards more music :)
