They are indeed. Years ago I used to work in NASA's parts analysis lab. I got to do cross sectioning of components, destructive physical analysis (DPA), a lot of optical inspections under high magnification and electron microscopy.
Under the electron microscope, integrated circuits look like cities and futuristic worlds.
