The Best Speakers Under $200/pair

Amen. George is a straight shooter with the best of intentions, and I respect that about him. Take what he says at face value, he wouldn't bother offering an opinion if he didn't feel strongly about an issue. I'll take honesty to sarcasm any day of the week...Source: Bluesound Node 2i - Preamp/DAC: Benchmark DAC2 DX - Amp: Parasound Halo A21 - Speakers: MartinLogan Motion 60XTi - Shop Rig: Yamaha A-S501 Integrated - Shop Spkrs: Elac Debut 2.0 B5.2

Mark,
We aren't trying to bust you hump here, you ask for opinions, you get them. No one is making a character judgement based on your gear.

Mark,
George blessed you with a response, don't take it the wrong way. FWIW, I happen to agree with him.
Stick around, learn some...share some.

Hey Mark, if you think Gorge was trying to be mean, You just gotta remember: He's the kind of guy who'll keep his GOOD friends wife BUSY while he's away.;)
Don't get indignant, man. Hang out. Here check this out:

Since I keep getting e-mails about this, I better try to put this to rest.
1. I asked for opinions about speakers, not for advice about anything else.
2. I edited my signature to include the "small system" after I bought the Polks. It was not there originally.
3. Now that I have the Polks in the bedroom system, the Sony receiver is NOT the weak link. The TEAC CD recorder is. As a CD player, it does not sound as good as new, cheap DVD player. But it does make good CD recordings.
4. Here is the evolution of the bedroom system:
A. Started with the TEAC CD recorder and Denon cassette deck and some cheap computer speakers.
B. Then, I got a Phillips mini system with an auxilary input.
C. Third, I bought speakers at Radio Shack as an upgrade, and it was.
D. The Phillips mini system was moved to the kitchen to replace another mini system that died.
E. I needed an amp, so a friend of mine gave me the Sony receiver. The system took a big leap in quality at that point.
F. I decided to get better speakers; enter the Polk RTi4's.
G. I moved the Sherwood CD player to the bedroom.
5. I understand why some of you do not like the Sony receiver (hard transister sound, etc.). I would much rather have an integrated amp. I CANNOT afford to buy the amplification I want. Especially when I already have a very good system in the living room. The Sony stays until it dies.
6. Calling someone else's receiver "a dog" is rude. I forgive, but if this forum is that way, I do not need to come here. There are plenty of other forums where I can participate and be treated with civility.
7. I'll give this place another shot. I used the sell audio gear throughout most of the 80s... at a local store that cared about what was sold. I was kind of psyched about getting back into it again afer all these years.
8. Ill never give up two-channel stereo. It has nothing to do with the rest, but it is true.
Over and out. Peace.Mark Wellman ><>

George blessed you with a response, don't take it the wrong way.
That is about the most arrogant thing Ive ever read in this forum.
Mark,
There is a core membership in this forum that can be just as rude as George and the best way to keep from getting your feeling hurt when they bless a new member with a response is to remember that there are no lifeguards on duty at the gene pool.Best Regards, Cliff -
Cliff,
You have NO sense of humor and your wit isn't much better. Your lack of the aforementioned is probably a good indication that this forum isn't the place for you. We like to joke, cut up, throw in a little tongue in cheek, etc. Neither George's or my comments were said to hurt anybody, so lighten up or move on.

What is this, **** Oprah?
Grow some **** balls compadres, at least get a little thicker skin. You don't like the way things are done 'round here', move on down the road.
If you can take it tongue and cheek, and dish a little yourself, stick around, join the brotherhood, and have some fun. It is what it is around here, and don't look for it to change anytime soon. We are what, 5, 6, 7 years strong?
Mark, read the advice as this 'Your receiver sucks son, money better spent THERE first'. Sounds like solid advice to me, if you take it, I'm sure you will agree some time down the road.
Cheers,

You and Spydie (aka **** baggy-bag) should get a room.
Buttons? Pushing? This is an audio forum cochise, take a count on what your running mate has done here lately, audio-wise. Who is pressing more buttons on a regular basis, the 'gang' or Spydie, aka the local forum half-wit?
Yeah, that's what I thought.
Dunderhead.

spydie pushing buttons............now, that is funny!
He's been slapped up one side and down the other each and every time he posts that babble. The thing is, and this is too funny, he doesn't even realize what a joke he is.Political Correctness'.........defined

Neither Sid, it was a half-wit attempt at a derail. Not uncommon among the Kerry crowd. With that bunch, actual facts are hard to come by.
Get used to it, but deal accordingly. They are real good at selling a 'story', yet run like **** when anyone wants to talk facts.

My detractors can focus their full attention on what the cake said at the end of "Animal House".
George Grand (of the Jersey Grands) -
Whatever speakers you get I would make sure to look for something pretty efficient. I heard a few Sony receivers from this era. The one thing they seemed to have in common was their lack of ability at driving anything less than an easy load.
A pair of nOrh 3.0s can be had for about $200. That's new with shipping. They sound okay and can sound pretty good when set up properly. They won't rock the house or anything and don't go super low, but can image very well.
I would probably go for used though. For $200 you could get a decent vintage receiver and speakers. You could even sell your Sony and use that money to get a DAC and make that CDR sound like new.Make it Funky! -
Wow, this guy is a real nut. Nobody attacked him in even the smallest fashion! (stating the obvious, I know)
However, I think I have an explanation. When told his 80's receiver was not what he had hoped it to be, he consciously or subconsciously (most likely a combination of the two) transformed your criticisms into a personal attack. This allowed him to deny the awful truth that his receiver is crap and hopefully get others to feel sorry for him. For this reason, I don't believe even a single person sent him a hateful email - its just an excuse to post his stupid message. Who would bother?! He wants those reading this to believe that he was brutally attacked, but the simple fact is that he is making this up because he needs attention, but don't we all. (sorry if I exaggerated that just a bit, but this'll put an end to this arguement for you - I'm the *******, attack me ):D -
I've seen George get "rude" and that wasn't it.
The "strange but consistent code of conduct, and somehow rude/impolite behavior.." that you speak of is just guys (that respect and know each other) being guys.
Glad to see you sticking around.Political Correctness'.........defined

There is no pecking order. If someone gives you any ****, then give it back. Just be sure your right, 'cause iffen you ain't, we gonna find you a splintery rail...

I asked for opinions about speakers, not for advice about anything else.
We were trying to give you some options, maybe look at things in different light. I guess we didn't realize that you were sentimentally attached to the receiver. Now that I have the Polks in the bedroom system, the Sony receiver is NOT the weak link
Apparently you have things all figured out, why waste our time seeking opinons then? Since you were a knowledgeable audio salesman, you should know the best way to find speakers, get off your duff and go listen to them.Calling someone else's receiver "a dog" is rude
I don't agree. A 50wpc reciever that isn't recommended to push a 6ohm load? It is a dog. Now, if someone had called you an idiot for owning it, yes, that's rude. I own or have owned several pieces of gear that could well be considered dogs. No biggie, they served thier purpose for me and I was under no illusion that they weren't dogs. This goes for things other than audio. Tools for example, I'm not Tim Taylor so I don't need the biggest most expensive tools, cheap ones do me just fine.I CANNOT afford to buy the amplification I want
Pfffffffft........if you can live without the new car smell, there are TONS of great receivers and integrateds (possibly even separates) that can be had in the neighborhood of 200 dollars. Heck, the MF that ATC has listed in the FM would be a good start.
I agree, man, if you are ultra sensitive around here, it's gonna be interesting. I didn't see anything particularly out of line to Mark. A little honest critiquing along with some honest suggestions, sure, but c'mon this is getting ridiculous.

Man, I got over this when I posted the third time. I like the system in my bedroom; isn't that all that matters?
I did indeed get an e-mail every time someone else posted.
User Name, you sure read much into a few words. I am quite sane, and I hate when people feel sorry for me. I never felt as though anyone attacked me.
I used to be in the thick of all things audio back in the 80s. But I have not really paid much attention to it since about 1990. I live in the boondocks and do not get much chance to audition gear. So I thought I would ask before I went out.
I did buy speakers; it is already done. Why has this continued? I returned to the forum, and I said I forgave (and I did). So some of us disagree about what "rude" is. That's OK by me.
I am not sensitive, and I certainly am not looking for attention. My friends would laugh at what some of you have said, just like I did. Someone said that on this forum, you have to stick up for yourself, so I did. Sorry if I offended anyone or came off as a big baby. I am a very reasonable fellow, really. Peace.Mark Wellman ><>
