The sub randomly works. Sometime it hits it bass note and misses the rest of the time. The lights constantly switches from red to.green, I hear.it.turn off and on.

The level of signal you have coming into the subwoofer might be at the threshold for the auto on/off feature. That would account for the lights changing and the intermittent bass output. Try raising the level of the signal coming into the subwoofer, usually a sub out connection. If possible raise the low pass filter point of the sub out setting on your receiver as well.
