Do in ceiling speakers need back box to sound good ?

I have Polk V60 SLIM as my in ceiling atmos speakers in gypsum drop ceiling. I wanted to know that does these in-ceiling speakers need wood backboxes in the ceiling to sound optimal, or can I just mount them in the gypsum false ceiling ?

My atmos in ceiling speakers do not have back boxes and sound great, would they sound better with back boxes? not sure. with that said, if my whole system was installed in the ceiling and walls I am sure I would have made or purchased back boxes for my installation..

Thats what I was trying to figure out, the overhead speakers sounds good, but I wanted to know if back boxes are needed to make them sound better
