In addition to whatever crossover workings are in the Monitor 11 the two mid-drivers are separated by a large divider wall with one mid-driver having acoustic foam spanning the area directly under it. That was added to reduce the bass output.

It's been a long time since I was inside a Monitor 11, so things are coming back to me slowly. Another thing I remembered is the Monitor 11 with its much larger cabinet has a 12 inch PR while the Monitor 10 has a 10 inch.

My advice, if you want the performance of the Monitor 11 then buy a pair and stop trying to make the 10's into them.

@Gardenstater yes, all have the peerless tweeter and most have the silver basket MW's although 2/10 have been replaced with 6501's instead of 6500's, presumably when they mag shifted and locked up. Dates on crossovers are 79 and 80, and do have the 12uf cap in parallel to the 2.5 Ohm resistor. I am planning on making my own remote crossover board, so form factor on the polk board is not an issue. Just need to figure out what all I need to make it run right. Although all this might end up being a thought exercise.

@pitdogg2 thanks for sharing. Hoping I won't screw anything up too bad as to need more crossovers.

@F1nut thank you for the info about the interior of the 11 cabinets. That does change things a bit. I'll see if I can find some pictures of the inside of one, but might you have some handy? Fair advice.

xylocramer since you are interested (as am I), this old thread should be useful to you: https://forum.polkaudio.com/discussion/180831/model-11-rta-11-questions

Looks like they stacked L1 and L2 on top of each other by combining the binding post cup/spool with another plastic spool

  • Another thought is, since they used the MW6600X and not the MW6500, there may be some compatibility issue of the crossover with the 6500s. We do not know the Thiele/Small parameters for the 6600X, or at least I do not.

Also, would it be safe to remove the fuse from the circuit?

Yes it would. Make the first resistor 2.7ohms instead of 2.5
That Model 10 crossover schematic is not for the early 10 with the Peerless tweeter. We don't have that schematic so you will have to determine that from what you have in your speaker.

This is not correct, based upon my experience.
I own a pair of the Peerless M10s & have refreshed 2 other pairs (my children have them).
All 3 of them did indeed have the exact crossover posted here

Good to have some input on that from someone who owned them. I guess what I was trying to say is that we don't have the early schematics that would show the correct drivers and would be dated much earlier. I am starting to think in some cases when they changed a tweeter they just changed the MW to be compatible within the same crossover, or with a mild tweak. Question: Did you also check the inductor values, both inductance and wire gauge?

Did the early M10s have the MW6500? The 1984 schematic shows the MW6501. DCR of the two are quite different: MW6500/MW6501 6.500 Ohms/7.750 Ohms. Other T/S parameters are different also.

I did, and they matched the schematic, to the best of my equipment's ability to test.
My LCR meter is not NIST-level lab quality here ;-)

1 pair is a 2 fuse model, the other 2 pair are single fuse models.
  • Good to know. Did they have the MW6500 or the 6501?

I do not remember the ones I gave my kids.
The pair here have MW6500s & one fuse

Thanks Tony. So, the 2 fuse model probably pre-dating the single fuse, would probably also be MW6500s.

I had a pair of 10's that I bought new in 1979. My son has them now. They had Peerless and silver basket MW6500's. Also were fused. Westmassguy, Dave rebuilt them for me in 2013. IIRC the c/o had 2) 12 uf caps, 1) 34uf cap, a 2.5 and a 2.7 ohm resistor. I left the fuse in place.
  • Just got some goodies in the mail. Thanks @xschop

How do they sound? Did you foam the basket insides?
