Anyone put together a resume lately? It appears all the modern templates are formatted with 2 columns going down the entire length of the page. Any ideas, tips, or resources would be greatly appreciated. Fwiw I have 30+ years exp in the transportation industry. Thanks…

What got me hired to my most recent position was not my resume but my cover letter. I spelled out in detail all the things that I worked on over the last 26 years and what I'm capable of and I had three companies competing to hire me. Make sure you prepare a quality cover letter!

I forget but there is someone here that runs a resume consulting gig on the side. Anyone remember who that is?

As someone who sorts through a fair share of resumes, I will tell you that less is more. I never get to a second page - If you can't grab me on the first page, I'm moving on. Cover letter should be no more than two paragraphs. All your resume is, is a tool to get you an interview - no one hires based off the resume, the just use it to pick their interview pool.

Do your research, and tailor your resume and cover letter to each company you apply for. This takes a bit of effort, but it will pay off. For example, if you know the company you are applying at has a strong desire to promote from within, elaborate on your own successes as a mentor/trainer. If they are aggressively growing, elaborate on your willingness to advance/relocate, and give examples of establishing new business units within a company. Focus on results, nor responsibilities. For example, don't say "I was responsible for staffing and achieving budgeted payroll". Instead, say "I consistently managed payroll to within five basis points of budget, and I maintained a qualified staff of 150 employees, at the same time filling 80% of my management positions internally, through quality mentoring and training".

Know their culture, growth model, rough sales revenue (If publicly traded), and any current big news within the company - You will impress the person interviewing you if you can speak to where the company is at on these fronts.

I can’t believe how many people can’t fill out an application these days, it’s almost like they never went to school at all, it is very sad..

A lot of folks here are definitely more schooled than i am, but i am very good with my hands, i can trouble shoot a lot of things, and I can fill out an application, at least be prepared to fill one out if needed, and I can make a resume..

The pool of skilled labor has shrunk a bunch in the last few years, I would just like to know what these people are doing that have not gone back to work, how are they making ends meet? I know a lot of older people took early retirement, and i get that. But I don’t know anybody that’s not having staffing issues. It’s an employee’s market out there these days..

So many places use automation based on keywords/phrases
to pre-sort. HP sent all the people they let go to a consultant
who gave guidelines for how to get attention. But their big
thing was "networking" via LinkedIn. That had 0 effect for me in 2016.
A year or two later I started getting a ton of interest. But at that point
I wasn't interested. Then when I retired I suspended my LinkedIn
account to get rid of all the people bothering me.
It's become a strange job market. Good luck in your search.
