Going to spend about 4 days in Boston in August for the Italian fest, anyone got any recommendations for a Hotel, preferably by the water? Not too far from the fest.

Thanks in advance....

In order to elicit a response, Tony....you have to ask the question the proper way. Speak their language, in other words. Here, let me show you an example...

Got tendative plans at the Boxer Hotel, only because it isn't 500+ a night by the water. Any insights would be appreciated.

    Don't know that one.
Lots of nice hotels in Bahsten and Cambridge.
    None is cheap, though.

There are several very nice hotels down along the Charles in the PRC (People's Republic of Cambridge).

You could stay outta town & take the T in, too.
    I am just sayin'. ;)

oh -- and -- I mean, we're 2-1/2 hours* from The Hub of the Universe by car.
You might want to amble up and say howdy if you have a free day whilst out on the Right Coast. :)

    * Or maybe 4 hours, depending on traffic. Sometimes more. :# Fortunately, we don't get much snow in the summertime, so that helps.

PS If you get an urge for a "milkshake"... you want a frappe.

    You're welcome.

(Pronounced "frap" because if you pronounce it "fra-pay", your buddies are gonna call you an igit or tool.)

Yup. Sadly, I'd rather go without than have to stand in front of a high school kid and gravely intone that I would like a frap. :#

To say nothing of a Friendly's Fribble -- but I digress.

I guess we should teach @tonyb how to pronounce the names of cities & towns in the Bay State, so that he doesn't out himself as a tourist when he's in town. ;)

For example, he might find himself with a need to go to Meffa'. (Medford) I mean, it's just up the road.
And from there, it's just a hop, skip & a jump to Woob'n. (Woburn)
And from there, it's not all that far up I-93 to Havrill. (Haverhill)

... and then there's Route 128. Don't call it I-95. No one will know what you're talkin' about.

Massachusetts skipping the "R" sound in words makes an Italian cry. No way I will evert say "Wusta" (Worcester).

In my days during trips to Boston, I remember Boston had some of the worst and rudest drivers. Not one person would let a merging car into the traffic pattern. Don't drive!

For a hotel, my favorite was Fairmont Copley Plaza. The Boxer appears to be more modern hotel while occupying a historical building. I think you are good there Tony.

Historically for drinks and food, I liked the Union Oyster Bar where Daniel Webster was said to be a frequent customer. The original oyster bar is still surrounded by stools in the same locations as the originals. The Union Oyster Bar dates to 1826 and welcomed several presidents and the Kennedy family. There are certainly better seafood restaurants in Boston but none with the history. Two famous restaurants that no longer exist that I really liked were Tony's Pier Four (closed 2013) and Jimmie's Harbor Side (about 2005). Both at the waterfront. Tony's was covered with pictures of famous people who ate there - mainly the Kennedy Family. At Tony's, I had scrod for the first time.

I went to restaurants within Boston's Little Italy several times during visits, and enjoyed every minute. I had my first espresso long ago during my first visit to Boston at one of these restaurants. On my last trip to Boston, I went to see the USS Constitution. Other times, I explored the Freedom Trail, took the train to Cambridge, went to the old North Church and the Paul Revere House.

Have fun Tony and find the things that interest you. It is a fun city.

    Thanks guys.

BTW Doc, 2.5 hours....doesn't seem bad if I had a week, but I only have a few days to suck down some good food and vino, get arrested for public nudity. So much to do, so little time.
