Nuclear fusion is getting closer

At 72 I hope I am around when it finally works.

"It is here, in the tiny commune of Saint-Paul-lez-Durance, that 35 countries have come together to try and master nuclear fusion, a process that occurs naturally in the sun — and all stars — but is painfully difficult to replicate on Earth.

Fusion promises a virtually limitless form of energy that, unlike fossil fuels, emits zero greenhouse gases and, unlike the nuclear fission power used today, produces no long-life radioactive waste."

Let's hope they don't light off the whole planet.

Smart people need to figure out something before oil runs out or becomes prohibitively expensive or life is going to become drastically different.

"They" have been predicting we will run out of oil in 50 years
    since the 1950's...
Now it is somewhere between 2060's-2090's.
    I'm not concerned.

I'm not worried either but it is a real issue.

Probably about the same time as Santa Claus and his eight tiny reindeer fly out your arse. Though it is an awesome pipe dream to hope for, in reality we will have run out of crude oil and killed one another off long before this could ever become a practical source of electricity.

So to solve global warming we’re creating a second sun here on Earth. Seems logical.
Oh, Listen here mister. We got no way of understandin' this world. But we got as much sense of this bird flyin in the sky. Now there is a lot that bird don't know, but it don't change the fact that the world is happening to him all the same. What I am tryin to say is, is that the course of your life, well its changing, and you don't even see it- Forest Bondurant

I'm too dumb to know or pretend to know the truth but hopefully that is.

oil's mostly from long, long dead plant matter, not dinos. :#

Fusion is our only hope for a sustainable and clean future that includes things like heating, A/C, running water, electricity -- stuff like that.
There's a lot of hub-bub about small fusion reactors that are ostensibly close to practicality. Lots of VC money went into several start-ups. One is minutes from our old hometown (Harvard) in the erstwhile Fort Devens.
I am a little skeptical of these firebrand startups (imagine that?!) but maybe they know something the Big Physics tokamak tech bros didn't.

    We'll see...

The abiotic oil theories must be true in my opinion. How else could it be found so deep down in such great quantities and even below non-permeable rock layers?

Drop in the bucket compared to the subsidies energy corporations have received the last 10-15 years for wind farms that are now worn out and need repowered.

A 2020 report by IRENA9 tracked some $634 billion in energy-sector subsidies in 2020, and found that around 70% went to fossil fuels. Only 20% went to renewable power generation, 6% to biofuels and just over 3% to nuclear.Oct 20, 2021

Maybe, but look at the long list of products produced from fossil fuels, can't say that about renewables.
