RTi8 vs RTi12
So I have had a pair of RTi8's since college. I got them on a closeout from Circuit City. They sounded awesome from the start - so much so, that my dad bought two pairs and my brother bought a pair. At the time, I ran them off a Nakamichi 2-channel receiver, then a Harmon Kardon 2-channel receiver, then a Crown DC300 Amp with a Luxman preamp, and finally my current setup of a Onkyo M506rs amp with a Onkyo P508 preamp. They are great speakers and really did well in all spaces I put them - from small college dormr ooms to simple family rooms to larger living spaces with high ceilings. Although I love them, my ears were saying I wanted more. And so you know what type of music I listen to - it's all over the place, but I love classical, so Beethoven, Bach, Berlioz, Dvorak, and then into musicals like Phantom of the Opera. I also love some great Motown and even some new age stuff. So the speakers really go through a full range for my listening.
I don't do any home theater (I'm a weirdo who can't get past the idea that I'm NOT in the movie and don't need to the sound everywhere around me).
I had done some reading through a variety of sources and was looking at all sorts of speakers - Klipsch, Polk, and so many others that I wasn't familiar with. I really liked the RTi8's, so I was more interested in RTi12's if I could find them. FINALLY, after several years of casual searching, I found a pair and bought them. Luckily enough, they were only used for 2 months very minimally - the previous owner found them in an unopened box in Florida and tried using them for his home theater but they just didn't fit the space he needed them to be in. In less than a week, I can say, "Wow." I haven't really pushed them as I like to follow a break-in period for the most part (I know they haven't hit a 100-150 hour mark on them yet). But the tones, depths, details that I can hear on the RTi12's vs my RTi8's are incredibly different. I pick up a violin part I never heard in Elgar. I hear a new voice in Carmina Burana. Truly, I'm impressed so far. They sound so balanced for classical music. I am excited to hear more of the new age music I like to listen to as well.
I don't consider myself an audiophile, as I think I'm still pretty dumb when understanding a lot of how everything works, but I grew up appreciating a lot of great systems. My dad has a Nikko system with some high-end (can't recall the model) Polks in our house. He has a Crown system in the pull barn with Voice of the Theater speakers that one can hear opera playing on as they pull in the long driveway. So while I'm not an audiophile, I've certainly grown up and still live among people I think are! I appreciate these forums very much, and I hope my amateur-ish insight can help the next audio amateur!

I’ve never had the chance to compare the 8’s and the 12’s. Sounds like you’re very happy with the upgrade. Congrats!Things work out best for those who make the best of the way things work out.-John Wooden
