Gasketing tape

First off, thanks to the poster (F1nut?) who pointed out the availability of speaker gasket tape at PartsExpress. Two questions, please.

1. which width (3/8 or 1/2) appropriate for MW6500 sealing?
2. is the same width appropriate for sealing the binding post cup on a monitor?

Thanks in advance for your reply.

All you need to do is measure the basket flange it will go on.

I measured an original gasket, which is 3/8" wide.

    Yes.

As noted, the Parts Express gasket material doesn't compress all the way at first. You need to tighten the screws over time to get it to fully compress. I haven't used Armacell, but it should work.

My drivers were all equipped from Polk with 1/2" wide foam tape gaskets. Actually, the original 1979 drivers were more like a 17/32" wide light grey thin foam tape, that was thin enough that they could overlap the ends quite a bit. Very compressible and not shiny or smooth.

I have some 1983 drivers where the gaskets are probably almost as thin but are made of a shinier black foam that feels slightly firmer that is 1/2" wide. Those are one piece.

My NOS 1999 Made in Mexico came with 1/2" wide one piece black shiny foam gasket that is way too thick at 1/8". Way too firm as well and it doesn't want to stay compressed after driver removal when it was installed for over a year. I don't like this stuff.

This is a random pick from my stash. Clearly 3/8". The entire lip isn't a 1/2".

Just to be clear, that ruler is not butted up against the basket. Even when it is the lip is still shy of 1/2".

  • You know I like photos -- thanks F1nut.
Which of the two gasket materials in question is pictured?

My measurements on mine are correct. But of course they only apply to mine. They are all MW6500 with the dates specified. They tended to roll up a tad onto the filleted area of the stamped steel basket, in places, especially on the 1979 ones.

  • Sorry my bad. I double checked this morning and that 1979 light grey foam tape which is the best gasket material of any drivers I have, is actually 13/32", so just a tad over 3/8". I'm becoming increasingly aware that I need glasses stronger than the lowest readers I have been using lol.

Even this stuff, as soft as it is, does not compress evenly because the stamped steel basket flange isn't stiff enough. At the holes it is compressed to 1/32" and midway between the holes it is more like 1/16". I am working on a solution to this. Stay tuned......

    Correction/F1nut confirmation much appreciated.
