My mother inlaw is looking to buy a dvd player, fine and well. She went ot a shop here in town and what do they try and sell her a DVD player/recorder. She's the type who records all her soaps every day,the sales man told her this would be perfect. As well he tells her that you shouldn't play your cd's in your dvd player as it's not good....in my head I thought next they'll be trying to sell her 300$ of monster cables to hook it up!! SOME PEOPLE !!! she has a prologic system and wants to rent dvd's here and there but whay a 700$machine.... another thing the guy said you can put all your dig cam pics on dvd too...well she doesn't own one !! I'd be so tempted to go in with her and pretend I know nothing and let'em try selling us the same crap !!

Sounds like maybe she could be in the market for a DVD recorder, I think the salesman was just doing his job in trying to upsell, this is North America not Red China. She doesn't have to buy what he tells her to buy, its called suggestive selling.
-
No it's called telling someone they need this product when they really don't it's also called taking advantage of someone who know nothing
upselling is this other regular dvd player not recorder has more features..... thats like someone looking to buy a minivan for his family but the salesman is trying to sell him a audi TT -
Was that a direct quote from the salesman? "You need this product?"
Or did he suggest it? Your comparison with the Audi is a poor one. Perhaps a person lookin at a wagon and then somebody who suggests a SUV or Mini Van is more in tune.
I worked in retail sales. You have to at least show all the prospects and options available to the consumer and let them make an educated decision. Selling a DVD recorder to anybody is not out of the question. This is not a house, car or even Projection TV. -
ok then a mazda miata...... if I go in looking for a dvd player, did the words recorder come out....not at all !! show me your different dvd players nothing else....sheesh anything to make an extra buck !! the possible puchaser never mentioned anything about wanting to record tv shows on her dvdplayer and if I was to tell a sales man ok show me your dvd recorder and tell him/her that I record about 4 hrs of tv a day.....as a salesperson I would say then stick to your vcr tapes are cheap and you can re-record alot more while conserving some of the quality...

Willow, most people dont know about DVD recorders. You yourself said that your mother in-law knew "nothing".
A dvd recorder is great for weekly recording of TV shows. Alot of the newer ones will have built in harddrives and require no such disc's for weekly recording. There is very little loss of quality over time, and you can burn whatever show you really enjoyed to a dsic down the road and keep it. DVD recorders are on the way in, DVD players on the way out. This christmass DVD recorders will represent up to 40% of all DVD purchases.
This is not China, Cuba or the old USSR. People are allowed to show other people things, or even recommened newer technology's in order to make a sale. Is a person wrong for showing another person a DLP or LCD even if said consumer asked to see some RPTV's? -
well good to know that some have built in hard drives. Then this would make sense. What amount of time can you record on these "hard drives "
and show no, to recommend ....thats different -
taking advantage of uninformed buyers seems to be the american way.
i'm in the process of buying a diamond engagement ring and have spent *alot* of time this past couple weeks learning everything i can about diamonds. i'm really glad i did because i know i'm not going to get ripped off now and with what people tried to sell me when i first started looking i definitely would have.
knowledge is power. -
that bothers me as well we need to start a website, knowledge.com
where peeps can ask anything related to sales , and how-to buy.. -
Questions related to sales are taken care of by consumer guide I think.....that wd be consumerguide.com.
Looks like this is gettin serious in here.....I have a problem, cant make em  faces in real life
Hope everyone's having a good day....take it easy folks! -
Toshiba, Panasonic and Pioneer offer DVD recorders that can record up to 103hrs. They all have 80 gig harddrives in them. These have been out for almost a year.

very interesting thank you !! Please don't take it personal there are some great people in sales I met one about 2 weeks ago and next time Im in that store I will speak to his manager advising him he's got a great employee.
I just dont appreciate when they make customers buy more than what they need.
thanks again for the info -
Willow,
I have a RCA DVD player DRS 7000 that has a hard drive in it that will record digital programming, similiar to a Tivo can time slip etc. Works very well with cable systems and no monthly fee. I only gave around 225.00 for the thing from Buy.com, RCA is closing these out for a more expensive model that does DVD/R+RW. Not sure if it was she wants but it eliminates the need for the tapes.
