Sonic Holography - Revisited

So, I picked up the Carver C4000 demo LP some time ago and the SH encoded music sounded pretty damn good....and it got me to thinking.
I know, I know.....I don’t wish to rehash the SDA / Sonic Holography Urinary Olympiad......but, I did obtain a Carver C9. Had it recapped, better power supply, better rca jacks.
So, my previous experience with SH was pretty MEH. But It was just, ok, let’s press this button and see what happens.......in this case, I have made some effort to conform to the setup requirements set forth in the manual
So, does it work?
So far, yes and no. It’s not SDA .......but it’s also not what I remember SH being either. Thin, dull and diffuse imaging is what I remember with the occasional “ out of left field” sound artifact.
So, I’m getting some pretty three dimensional and stable imaging. Image Depth with the Amazings has always been first class and SH accentuates it. More so than soundstage width, depth is the thing I’m catching most.
I’m finding the WIDE setting to be the sweet spot. The SH effect is less pronounced but you don’t get the whole thing collapse when you move an inch or two.
More to follow, to be sure......but so far, it’s a cool experiment.

Is that a modwright Sony SACD player there Hoss?
My experience with SH was a lot like your first experience. Mine was from the C16 preamp. Roland and Rita have both been through it did their maintenance on it.
It's a keeper
I've never heard the actual C9 box. Some say it's better than the SH incorporated in the preamps. IDK -
Yes it is a Modwright.......it is definitely a keeper.
I’d really like to find another C19. Selling mine was one of the things I regret most...and, yes, I’ve always been led to believe that the C9 was the way to go....I plan for the future. - F1Nut -
I remember hearing the SH demo back in the 80's with a C-1 and an M1.5t on Boston Acoustics A400's. It was crazy good! I know I was told the speakers drivers/tweeters have to be aligned perfectly vertical and at the same depth for it to work properly so speaker choices were limited (no horns, or out of alignment drivers).Gustard X26 Pro DAC

I've had various Sonic Holography products over the years. It's really easy to get it wrong when you don't set it up properly or are using poor equipment. When done right it is amazing though! I've also heard it on the Carver Amazings. Troy is right in that it adds more depth to the image.
