Dust cap

just picked up these monitor 5's (from 1981 with mw6500 $100)
dust caps have been dented in on both. Before I start trying my methods, has anyone had any good success with a repair (restore) that they can let me know how they did it? d7ngdyzgifjh.jpg

I've had varying success with using a vacuum. I would put the end over the dustcap and then switch it on and off for a second or so. Worked for my Eosones, but didn't do anything to the metal domes on my Monitor Audios I used to have. worth a shot though, and its low risk especially when you're not working with tweeters
  • I thought about the vacuum as well, along with a cardboard toilet paper roll. and using my hand over it to control how much suction.

Vac hose on cap like micah said on/off AFTER hose is on cap.

Do not try to lift off until there's no suction.
  • thanks for the advise...!

it is much better but not 100%
the close up one looks better but I thinks someone else tried to do something like I just did because there looks like a slight bend in the speaker itself. (cant see it in the photos)

If you upgrade to phase plugs (@xschop) you will be removing those dust caps with an Xacto knife anyway :) I know sounds daunting but I will be trying it and will report results when I do.8lq4znrtme4a.jpg

They do not always come back and look that nice after being pushed in like yours were. Job well done! Now put the grills on ๐Ÿ˜‰

I think if I tried that I would be off of coffee for a few days and take an extra beta blocker to slow my heart rate down to 45bpm
Scarry with a knife that close to a mw6500.... ๐Ÿ˜ฌ๐Ÿ™‚

  • Just hooked them up to my old NAD 3020, sounds nice and warm... Pretty happy that I found them... I am biased towards the peerless tweeters.

I was trying to do a search here on the dust cap mold discussion. Can't find, so here's my synopsis... The thin white ring is definitely mold. On the recent drivers that I've removed caps with white rings, there was the same thin white layer of it on the pole-pieces....

I believe we established years ago that it's related to the adhesive used to attach the dust covers. Whatever, it comes off with Windex.
