TV thru receiver - why?

Well, I just set up my new and wonderful Onkyo 701 for stereo, but then got frustrated with the TV inputs, etc.
Let me 'splain. I run an S-cable from DVD player right to my TV set - and wonder why in the world I'd ever want to run it THROUGH my Onkyo? Am I missing something here? The pic is great, and the sound goes from DVD to ONkyo, not to TV.
I am confused about this - and as I know a lot about music, but little about wire hookups - thought I'd beg for help. Larry R.

I run my svideo to from my DVD player to receiver as well the play station, if I had sat/ or dig cable I would run that into the receiver as well, in my case as well as many others the receiver's svideo inputs act like a HUB all your svideos get plugged in to the receiver and only one from the receiver to the TV. As well some peeps use the internal video switching from comp. to svideo or vice-verca.

If you had a few sources such as DVD, satelite, Playstation.... all using s-video and only had one s-video input on your TV, then could run things through the receiver. If you have one source and can plug it directly to the TV all the better.

Oh! That's what I THOUGHT, but wasn't sure. With my one-and-only S-video out to the TV, there's NO reason to go thru the receiver! Thanx, Polk Folk - as always, I get real answers here. Now, back to listening to my new and GREAT set-up. Ahhhhhh! I know-I know - youze guyz probably have systems that are light-years better than mine - but this is pretty darned good for me right now! Onkyo 701, RTi6s in front and, would you believe, Radio Shack Optimus speakers in surround. They are clean, clear, and very affordable! So classify me as "lo-end" GRIN Larry R.

Those little Rat Shack Minimus-7's are **** hot little satellites, and almost sound realistic going full range. I can't get enough of those little bomb-proof pups. I probably have seven or eight around here.

A real good reason to go straight to the tv with the video portion if you can, is to make life a little simpler on those around you. Also makes sense to send AT LEAST, the audio portion directly to the tv also (lot of dvd players I've seen offer two SETS, of straight stereo, audio outs). This way, if the ladies JUST WANT TO WATCH A DVD, they don't have to jack around with the stereo or home theater receiver. Touchy feely movies don't have too many surround effects you know.

I guess sense you only have ONE source for video, its fine. But that seems kind of weird. I mean if you even had cable, then it would make it eaiser to switch back and forth.
One advantage is; that if you want quality video, you need a quality cable. If you only have one cable to run, you save money.

Sooner or later you're going to realize, just as I did, there's a difference between knowing the path...and walking it.
