L800's in a big room for 'active' listening

Hi All,

I'm setting up sound (2 channels) in a big room that will have a pool table and open kitchen at the other end. The size of the room is ~5m x 18m (wall to the kitchen counter).
Looking at L800, but not sure if it worth it because there is no 'sitting listening place' (kitchen island doesn't count). The idea is to enjoy good sound while playing pool/ping-pong.
Have NAD C 658 + pair of PC Audio Stellar M700's. Will it all work with L800's?

Hello, and welcome. L600s would be a better choice if you want a pair of floor standing speakers. SDA speakers are designed for sitting in one central spot for them to sound best. SDA speakers have always sounded weird to me when outside the "sweet spot" for them.

For a space that size though, I'd be thinking in the long term about in-ceiling speakers to cover the entire space and asking a custom installer for advice on a system approach.

Ended up getting pair of L600.
I (also getting a lot of compliments about sound from people) absolutely happy with them, but only after I spent some time with Dirac (ended up changing NAD to Mini DSP SHD). What a difference it makes!
  • Another question I have is about lifting them up a bit from the floor. Most of the time everybody are standing (playing pool, dancing) and I think lifting them closer to the ears level will make the sound even better. Is it ok/normal to have such a speakers lifted?

Wouldn't bother with it, for several reasons. Leave them as is.

Congrats on your new L600, just read the review of them in The Absolute Sound magazine.
  • Thanks! Yes, the weight (these are heave beasts!) probably one of the reasons :) Is it in printed version? Can't find it on their site..

So, you don't really sit and critically listen to music in this room? This is mostly a large 16.4 ft. x 59 ft. open concept multipurpose game room. You want the speakers lifted to ear level for dancing and playing pool?

I wonder if you have the right system in this room for your needs?

Are you in need of tall, wide dispersion, long throw design speakers? Have you considered an active line array column system? Full room vertical and horizontal coverage!

I almost locked on one of these 'vertical soundbars' (different vendor though), but there was some build/design problems and I passed... These ones are looking immaculate though, will be interesting to hear them in standup stereo config.

Here is my current setup, as you can see it's not too wide to get the proper stereo (so, wide dispersion us probably not really needed), but the height can be improved for sure.
And it's based on my perception - when I go downstairs (stairway on the right side) I think I hear better sound:)

If it were me I would seek out a set of definitive bp7000sc and place them in the middle of the room on each side.

In phase bipolar front and back drivers with massive subwoofer. True throw down speakers

There are home audio line arrays, which are a different beast in directivity like these older model Boston Acoustics E100. I know one of the guys selling a set: https://www.ebay.com/sch/i.html?_from=R40&_trksid=p2334524.m570.l1313&_nkw=boston+acoustics+E100&_sacat=0&LH_TitleDesc=0&_odkw=Boston+Acoustics+M&_osacat=0

Great speakers, but I really enjoy the sound of L600 - works very well for this room (speakers & pool table placements are almost ideal). The idea was to get pair of big SVC subs and put them on subs, but L600 surprised me with a really good bass...
I guess pair of good subs is not going to hurt in dance party situation (especially with Dirac available

I'm one to say...do what YOU think.

I like your idea of raising them since there's no seating in front of them.

Very NICE room there. Very nice. Great view too.<3
Most people just listen to music and watch movies. I EXPERIENCE them.

That’s a helluva view you got out the windows.
